There is a new comedy show coming up about an all black family. No, it's not a Cosby reboot! LOL! It's title torques me off a bit, however: "Black-ish". Um, 'scuze me, but if there was a show called "White-ish" featuring an an all white cast there would be riots and lawsuits! The double standards and reverse bigotry of Hollywood annoys me to no end.

It helps if you add a bit of milk to it first...but not too much.

Ugh. I really don't like stuff like that. I've never heard of it until you mentioned it just now. I saw maybe a few seconds of a trailer for it and I can already tell what it will be like. It's going to be ANOTHER show that has stereotypes of how black families are and how black people are. It's not funny to me and I find it offensive when people make shows like this. I hate how these shows always have the dad being a complete idiot. Actually, a lot of shows have dads who are complete idiots. It's so stupid. On these shows, though, the moms are very similar. They're all tough and stern. Not everyone is that way. I have trouble talking sternly to people and I'm not very tough at all. It's another stereotype. I really wish any show would show diversity in personality and have deep characters. Why do so many shows have such shallow and predictable characters? There are actually multiple shows aimed to kids that have deeper characters and plots AND can be funny. People go on about how kids' shows are dead these days. So are adult shows in my opinion.

With Lawrence Fishburne as the dad, I highly doubt he'll come of as stupid. And for what it is worth, Bill Cosby never really did either; he was just "whipped" (if you don't know what that means, ask a married man! LOL!). AS for the stereotypes, because of the present state of our country I am betting this show is produced primarily by black folks and the stereotypes will be "white people this" and "white people that." Like I said ... reverse bigotry.

You realize the Cosby show isn't the only show about a black family, right? I mainly had Tyler Perry's sitcoms in mind.... You're probably right about the stereotypes thing. That annoys me, too. That's why I don't watch these shows.

I never paid any attention to Tyler Perry ... he's a complete moron.. However, I have a great deal of respect for Cos, even though he's gotten a bit cranky in his old age, and L. Fishburne has always been a well-respected actor who typically plays very serious roles, so I have a hard time seeing him playing someone stupid. Fresh Prince, of course, had an idiot for a father, even though he was a judge. (Did I just date myself!? LOL!)
re: the "mom" thing ... everyone wants a mom that is not stern or tough, so they can get away with all kinds of stuff. Of course, that's not necessarily a good thing. If my mother-in-law had been my mom I cannot imagine the trouble I would have gotten into! And I have no wonder concerning the trouble my brother-in-law got into!

I want to be able to write music in the styles I like but be able to story like this. Rez/Glenn Kaiser is a master at this.

Blackish is about an affluent Black family living in an upscale predominantly White community and is based around the conflict between the desire of the kids to be like their friends and the desire of the dad (Anthony Anderson, not Laurence Fishburne) to keep his family "Black". Yep, sounds like cliches and stereotypes will abound (like Carlton on FPoBA), but let's face it, comedy is and always has been built on stereotypes. Sometimes those stereotypes cross a line, but there are also a lot of people who are just looking for a reason to be offended by things.

I think it all depends on how they play the comedy. If the whites come across and morally and intellectually inferior all the time it will be a condescending and stupid. It can be done right, but there is a fine line the writers will have to tread to keep it from coming across as offensive to both blacks and whites. I think a good example was the old show "The Jefferesons". I think they did a good job making both blacks and whites look silly on that show (although Sherman Hemsley's character-who is black-was the brunt of most jokes, the zingers usually came from his wife or maid who where also black).

Yeah, from the previews I saw, I thought the reason they called it that was because the mom is actually mixed. I dont know, I would have to see it before I say if I like it or not.
