Exactly! I blame the high sale of anti-depressants grunge.

If it wasn't for Nirvana, MTV would still be playing hair metal

That reminds me of this quote from Bart Simpson "Making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel" (regarding the 90's music scene at a Lolapalooza style festival they were lampooning)

I disagree. Something else would have killed hair metal. No style of music retains that much popularity for 2 decades.

I have to agree with Staybrite. I think popularity killed hair metal, and tried to kill all metal. Look at bands like G&R, Motley Crue, and Metallica. IMO their best work is arguably their earlier stuff. Then they got popular and started writing songs to sell instead of songs to sing.

Let us hold a moment of silence for all those True Rock and Metal bands that stuck with the classic sounds of the 70s and 80s as long as they could through the 90s. They were truly troopers in a tough time for Rock music.

The record companies also signed a ton of "sound alike" bands in the early 90's and literally flooded the market with b-grade hair metal acts. That couldn't have helped either.

When I was in college during the second half of the 80's the "classic rock" stations started playing 70's music, with some early 80's thrown in.
During the 90's the "classic rock" stations played 70's music, with some 80's music thrown in.
During the first decade of the new century the "classic rock" stations played 70's and 80's music.
So far in this, the second decade, the "classic rock" stations play 70's and 80's music.
Anybody else see a trend here?

Very Poignant ^
We lost our local Classic Rock radio station here. So bummed. They used to play 70s and 80s ROCK. One day I tuned in and instead of "Classic ROCK", it's "CLASSIC HITS" and now they play everything from the 70s up to the new millennium, including Michael Jackson, disco, etc... a sad day indeed.

Yea, our local "classic" station is pretty much the same. However, I can't say that I have ever heard anything obviously 90's on it; no Soundgarden, no Pearl Jam, no Nirvana. Unfortunately, while I like 70's music, they tend to play too much of it for my taste, and most of that Motown and disco.

If it wasn't for 90's songs, I wouldn't know...
...that a church bell tolls amidst the frozen nordic winds ...of the blasphemous abomination of the satanic pentagram ...to behold the rising of the scarlet moon ...that thine hour has come ...to release and clothe the virgin sacrifice ...to drink from the chalice of blood ...to silence the blasphemous chanting ...to invert the inverted cross ...that an abandoned grave bathes softly in the moon light ...to crush the bloodied horns of the goat ...about the weak, feeble, dying, antichrist ...about the day of total armageddon holocaust
