I agree. We were attracted to many of the songs/bands we like because of the lyrics. We thought they were funny and cool. The lyrics of pop music have always been aimed at the rebellous youth who bought the albums just like today's pop is. With that in mind, you will always get vulgar, violent, and maybe even hate-infused lyrics as each generation feels that it's music must be more rebellious than their parents' music was. Sadly, our generation's music was pretty vulgar on it's own, so no wonder today's stuff is as bad as it is. Can you imagine what it will be like in the future? Rock videos will probably just be shots of the band playing during porn scenes.

I'll have to agree. As a music lover since early childhood, I've loved many songs and groups strictly cuz of their sound, not their lyrics. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I gravitated towards bands like Slayer, Crass, Bad Religion, King Diamond, Lizzy Borden, W.A.S.P., S.O.D., etc - strictly cuz they were "bad", "cool", "angry", "against everything" and so on. But what about great songs that made the radio - Wouldn't cherry pie, with it's great sound, have still been popular if they sang with the same attitude but said "She's my Sweety Pie..." and worked the lyrics to be a clean love song, where Warrant sings about being head over heels for this gal, sans all the sexual lyrics ? The song SOUNDS great, am I naive to think that it would have worked without the sexual innuendos ? (and they would've had to change the album art ) What's your thoughts on this ?

It would be interesting to take 80s metal and have it created and released in the 50s. So you have the exact same sound of 80s metal, but created during the innocence that was so prevalent in 1950's popular entertainment. What would the lyrics be like then ? I think it'd be cool ! haha ---------------------------------------------------------------
Can we even think of any bands that fall into the category of 80s metal, glam or otherwise, that made the charts with songs that weren't about sex ? or about alternative religious beliefs/idealisms ? I'm trying to, but everyone that pops in my head had some sort of innuendo.

It's a great thought but I don't think it would have worked. Plus, in my experience, it's really hard to convince someone with no moral standard about a subject to change what they say/think about it, if that makes sense.

It's funny because I wasn't raised in a Christian home and didn't even come to a knowing salvation through Christ until 2005 (in my 30's). But I was always a bit disturbed by bands with bad lyrics. I really liked Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dokken, Queensryche etc., but the few songs those bands sang that were about the occult or sexual immorality kind of bothered me a little. I liked Motley Crue when they were "shouting at the devil" but once they started singing anthems to strippers I kind of lost interest. I remember when a few of my friends started getting into Slayer I bought one of their albums and tried to like it but I just couldn't...the lyrics just bothered me (and I was not a fan of thrash at all). Don't get me wrong, I was not a saint by any means. As a matter of fact I hated most Christians and when one of them pestered me about my music or my long hair (or my drug use) I used to rail against them just as hard and claim that "the Devil got a raw deal just for being a rebel". So I was not a good young man at all. I can't explain my disdain for songs with lyrics about sexual immorality or satanic stuff, other than to say it just might have been God working on my heart.

That was one of the songs that got them all that airplay on MTV. Squeaky clean band lyrically, at least from what I remember. A lot of metalheads hated them and thought they were a bunch of pansies. So as a metalhead, you had to kind of like them privately. lol. I even had their debut cd.

Favorite secular band of all time is Rammstein. But it may be losing its spot to Evile soon.
