Subject: Women & hard rock music -- metal. Mon Aug 11, 2008 8:47 am
Most of the time it are men who play in hard rock and metal bands. They write the music, the lyrics and do the vocals, play guitar, bass and drum.
I know Barlow Girl has only female members and for Rachel Rachel the same. Those musical ladies were responsible for vocals, lyrics, bass, drums and guitar.
Now I wonder if there are females involved in hard rock bands, metal bands? Are there females who play guitar, play bass or drum or write the music and or the lyrics for a band?

As far as band members, there aren't a lot within Christian music. I remember Janna Fishback played guitar for Slamcat. Skillet has a female drummer and keyboardplayer. Superchic(k) has a female vocalist, and her sister plays bass. I believe that Fireflight also has a sister combination like that where one sings and another plays bass.
There are quite a few female singers, but not a lot of female musicians in the scene.

It seems sister combinations work very well in the hard rock.
Venia the Finnish band has a female vocalist too. It seems hard rock, metal isn't very populair for women

There was a female thrash/metal band that was almost all girls (and one guy) called Ordained Fate.

You should search for a thread a couple months back on this topic. I think 7th Second or Chosen One started it. In it, I linked to one of my Firestream posts where many bands with female members are listed.

I just checked - I hadn't even visited FS since June 20. At least I don't post at CMR.

What I really meant is if there are more women in the hard rock and metal bands who do more than only singing the vocals. That was the meaning of this thread.
Cool to know Skillet has a female drummer.

Many of the bands mentioned in that thread have female musicians, too. Ilia for example is one of the rare all-female bands.

I found out about a group called Silhouette A.D. Two of the members are the daughters of Carey Womack from One Bad Pig.

You know what? It may very well be that she hasn't recorded guitars on any of the albums (I haven't looked at the credits for the most recent album).
But the two videos I have seen "Whispers in the Dark" and "Rebirth" they both show her playing guitar. Hmm aktually I just watched part of the "Rebirth" vid again, and they show her playing guitar, keys, and singing. (talented lady)

Interesting.... I didn't know she played guitar as well. That is John Cooper's wife, BTW.

I did notice that her and John shared the same last name, but I didn't know if they were married or siblings. There is a married couple in the band Fireflight as well (the bass player and one of the guitarists I think).
I love my wife to pieces, but I'm not sure I could play with her in a touring band. Who knows, it might work.

Mia and Dave Richards are a married couple too. Both sing and play in Gretchen. Mia is playing bass and is responsible for the vocals.
Do I have to conclude that there are not much women in hard rock and metal bands who do more than only the vocals?

I saw Skillet at Freedom Fest back in 1999 or so, right after she joined the band. John had a great bit where he said:
"I know a lot of you guys see a pretty girl who likes to rock out. You might be asking God. 'Lord, is she The One?'
"Well, I have a word from the Lord for you. She's MINE!"
