I used to design websites with basic HTML and Java and stuff WAY back in the day. I miss having my own website for my music collection and Bible studies, but have no clue about how things are done today. Is it possible to host a site using old methods, or is it best to use the new diy sites? Are they easy? Anyone in the know?

You can still use HTML to design sites. WordPress seems to be the most popular design tool. As with everything, there is a learning curve.

All I know is that Adobe Flashplayer is dead (although for some reason it keeps trying to update on my office computer any time I reboot). I don't know if he does web design or tech support (or both) but Topshot is a serious computer guy (like does it for a living) but he doesn't check the regular messages daily so your best bet to contact him might be with a PM. (do you like how I volunteered him without even asking him? )

Thanks for the info guys! I have an old account I started with WIX. I may just learn their site and build one there.
What I'd like to do is take my old music collection website I created years ago and re-upload it to a host, but it's got old methods of html that probably won't be sufficient for the new versions. It still works on my PC, but I want it available wherever I go. Not sure what I'm gonna do...

HTML and JavaSCRIPT are still the basis for the web. Ideally you would make sure your stuff is HTML5 compliant, but it will still work for a long time with HTML4. Flash was discontinued because of security flaws.
You could paste your "code" into a validator and it will shows things that aren't kosher technically, but HTML is pretty forgiving in some areas.
If it looks right on your PC and you have only .htm/html files then you should be fine.

Certainly not as painful as others' attitudes on other topics.

I need to build a simple website for our church. Any recommendations?
We had a man who build one for the church a couple of years ago and even took out a domain name for the church. He has since stopped coming to the church for reasons I won't go into now.
I need something easy but with a decent look. I need basic info about the church, it's location and service times. I would also want a place where I could link the message from each Sunday. I want to learn how to stream to Facebook and YouTube at the same time. The YouTube video would probably be okay to link.
Who is really good at doing this for a low cost? The church could afford it, but with it being mostly older people, I don't think that they would see the need for this. So, I will have to be the one to pay for it out of pocket to begin with.

I'd just use the google one that's free and comes with a gmail account. That's super easy to use, does all you want, and is really easy to update.
My website (link below) is made using it, and required almost zero intelligence.
Only thing you'd need to do is pay for a domain name (unless you already have one)

The man who built the previous church website took out the domain name when we paid him to build and maintain the site. He stopped coming soon thereafter and still owns the domain name. The website is no longer active. With the church so small, he want several hundred dollars annually for the site. I don't think we have enough content or activity to pay that level of money annually.

Buying a domain name should only cost about $10 a year, then you can use it as a forwarding address to the google website address. So, if they type in www .churchblahblahblah .com (or whatever) then it just forwards to the google website address.
my google address is https://sites.google.com/site/silenceismadness777 but I could buy www .silenceismadness. net and then when someone types that in it goes straight to the sites.google.
Doing it that way makes it completely free apart from the $10. I think there is a way to acutally buy the domain name right out, although I haven't looked in to that.

Unless he is willing to transfer the current domain name to someone else, you would need to choose another one. If the church paid him to get the domain in addition to creating the site then I would say the church technically owns it and he should turn it over.
