Hi guys. In the last few days I have learned something pretty amazing about Facebook (and presumably other social media platforms). I want to share it here so that you can use this information to support your favourite bands and their various missions.
Fact 1: even if you have thousands of followers, the FB algorithm does not necessarily let them see what you post in their news feed Fact 2: just a few shares within the first 24 hours increases the reach of a post in a BIG way. Check this out:
Last week I posted a very cute picture of a dog with the caption "I'm pooped" on it. I then gave an update of what I'd been doing in the studio that day. It got 20 comments, 3 likes, and one 1 share. That post reached 84 people. We have over 4000 followers and it only went to 84 of them!
Then, we posted a short sample of a song from our upcoming album and a video revealing the album artwork. We have 6 comments and 9 likes. We had one fan who shared it nine times within that first 24 hours. That post reached 1,138 people. That's still not all of our 4000+ followers, but it's a far cry better than the 84 that I reached on the earlier post that's for sure!
Even if you only have a small group of friends on your personal profile, The algorithm picks up the share, not the number of people linked to your profile. I think that's a pretty neat. I am stunned by the difference 9 early shares made. Shares are golden folks, especially given that a lot of the music we listen to on this forum is mission-based. So whatever band you listen to, if you love the message in a song, become part of the mission and share it widely. It really makes a HUGE difference. We can work the social media algorithms in our favour to spread the Word. How cool is that!

The algorithm that Facecrap uses is to decrease your views so that you will pay them to "boost your post". All that does, for the most part, is push your notification to all the people you are linked to. They say you get this for free, but they consider themselves an advertising agency. Between this and downright censorship of conservative views, this is why many people are looking at MeWe and Parler as alternatives. Several of us are already there. MeWe is the most like Facebook, but to get all features they want you to pay $4.99 a month. If they would make that $1.99, I would do it. Make it a one time annual fee but get it down cheaper. I would even be okay with ads if they focused mostly on conservative based companies.

I hear your frustration, Chris. Although I'm not a very political person and I don't tend to get into political subjects, I know it must be frustrating to experience that. I have the added protection from that censorship nonsense because I don't use Facebook for anything other than music-related stuff so it's a non-issue for me. My point was that many bands have a FB presence and that if FB is something that you use, you can help those bands reach more people by sharing their music posts (more so than any other form of interaction). I just thought it was a neat discovery that can only benefit the mission fields.

I didn't realize that the shares were so important on Facebook. Good to know.

Yeah, I didn't either. It's a pretty powerful way to work the algorithm to spread the Good News.

^Yeah I stopped posting any photos on FB some time ago... and certainly won't ever post any pictures of our kids on there.
Back on topic, I always make it a point to "like" as much from bands as I can on FB and occasionally "share" posts.
