Those of you who are friends with me on facebook probably already heard this. My wife charged me with removing her electric ceiling fan because she wants to take it to our new home in Arizona. So I was working on that yesterday, on a ladder in our dining room. Somehow I fell backwards off the ladder. I twisted towards my left trying to avoid smashing into the sharp corner of two intersecting walls directly behind me. I did manage to miss the wall but fell directly on my left hand. It was instantly quite painful on my wrist. So much so that I almost passed out. After several hours of increased swelling and worsening pain I whimped-out and headed to the Emergency Department at the hospital. An x-ray confirmed I had broken a small piece off the top of one arm bone and split the other bone in two places. I got a temporary cast after they pulled the bones somewhat back into place. in a few days I get to see a specialist (orthopedic doctor) and get a more permanent cast. All in all not a super fun day.

Ouch! Glad it wasn't worse.
I broke both bones in my right wrist as a kid.

You are not wimping out by going to seek medical help. If you hadn't gone, you would've been in the same pain for even longer.

Yes, not technically moving until the end of March because we are waiting on the birth of another grandkid. But we are having a new home constructed in Arizona.

Wow, that's rough! For future reference go about the whole thing like I would have and the whole situation would've been avoided.
"Ceiling fan?? That old thing?? We'll just buy a new one, I think that one wobbles anyway... see... Look at it... Can't you see that wobble? You don't see it? I sure do and I don't think it's safe to reinstall it in the new house".

First of all - what a genius! Klutzy but good move to get out of working.
Second of all - Mike is right. You're having a NEW house built so get a NEW fan for it.

The funny part is my wife bought the fan like 5 years ago with the exact purpose of installing it at the outer patio of her retirement home. But found she couldn't wait and had me install it in our current home. Since I got hurt trying to take it down, they refused to let me finish the job. So her and the son had to get it down and install the replacement fan while I shouted instructions from the floor. After we were done she said "The ceilings in our new home are going to be almost 2ft higher, maybe we should just hire someone to put in the new fans."

No, I'm keeping the job I have now. I've been working remotely most of the time since late March anyway, it wont be much different in Arizona. The wife will need to get a new job though. Wish you could join me and escape the tyranny of WA.

Just shake it off and man up, Gary! If you don't end up with steel hardware in your wrist, is it really a break?
Of course, this is coming from the guy who has an 8" steel plate, 8 permanent screws, a wire running through his ankle, and three anchors on his heel. Everyone else seems like an underachiever to me unless you have more metal. Then they are my hero. Jim has us all beat!
Truthfully, I am sorry you had to go through this over a ceiling fan.

Wait I missed this the first time. Did you break both at the same time?

Uh-oh Chris jinxed me!
Looks like I will be getting some permanent steel in my wrist. Short one minute animation if anyone is interested in this kind of stuff. Surgery happens next Friday (Nov 6th). I guess it is relatively routine.

Both bones in the right leg above the ankle and one of the bones in the left leg right below the knee.

Dang! Back when I was 12 I broke all three of the large bones in my right leg. Had a cast from my toes to my butt.

I've only ever broken the bone in the top of my foot which is surprising since I use to ride bikes off ramps made of plywood and tires. I did have stitches a few times, mostly in the head which explains things.
