Anytime you mess with a final recorded project, you do lose some highs.  It is just the nature of things.  Sometimes losing those highs can improve the sound.  If you are boosting one frequency, you are going to be limiting another.  The trick is to find what needs boosting or cutting, and compressing helps to control the loss.
