So I've hit this point where I'd rather just listen to the 25 or so bands I've liked for a long time than discover any new (or old that I've never heard) music. My Amazon music wish list usually has anywhere from 10 to 30 albums I want - right now I have 5, and 2 of those I'm going to order by the end of the week when I get my gift cards, and the other 3 I'm on the fence about.
I've even looked at styles I don't listen to much (the rockabilly/punkabilly thread I started) and really, I only enjoy about 4 bands that we talked about.
Anyone else gone through this?

Nope. Still loving finding new bands to listen to.

Unlike the rest here it seems I hardly buy anything. I do have a few on the wish list that are available, but not in any hurry to pick them up (or decide to remove them perhaps). I prefer to just keep listening to my favorites. While there may be others out there that could become favorites, it takes way too much effort to find them.

I like discovering new bands (or new albums from old bands). But it seems I can count on both hands how many new albums I get each year in the "Christian" category (used to be I would need both hands, both feet....and a few fingers from one of Alldat's hands as well...which could be a real hassle because he never seemed to want to mail me any of his fingers...even if it was only temporary).

Now that I'm on disability, my exorbitant collecting has settled down a lot... however, my want list still grows, and I still am starving for a new band or an old album. Knowing my personality, I will NEVER stop. My problem is my wife doesn't want me exceeding the space I currently have for CDs and LPs. aaaaand the shelves are getting a bit "tight" as we speak
She says if I want a new album, I need to get rid of an old album to make space (she obviously has no clue how this works - haha ! )

Sorry dude, I'm with the rest of these guys in that I'm always happy to find a new or "new to me" band that I really like. That being said, I'm a lot more discriminating about what I'll buy now that I was when I was in my 20s. Then it was almost an obsession that if I saw something new that was somewhere in the ballpark of a style I liked, I bought it (gee, I wonder why I had so much credit card debt coming out of college?), and bands that I already liked I had to buy everything they put out. I spent a lot of time trying to find pre-Communication D&K stuff. Then one day I listened to a friend's copy of whatever the latest Petra album was and hated it and thought "why would I buy this when I know I'll never listen to it? Yeah, I know I have all the other ones, but those are good and this one isn't."

I still like it to listen to new bands like Zaxas and Deth Enemy, Waken Eyes. Of course my old rockers are still coo. But new finds can make me enthusiast.

I have been this way since Nirvana hit. I have no interest in anything post 1993 or so unless it is new music from classic bands.... In the late 80's and 90's I listened to "hair bands" exclusively. However, I have expanded in the past 20 years to enjoy other types of music like Jazz or what is known as "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" but none of it is new. It's all old stuff or if it IS new it is stuff that sounds classic, oh for example Reckless Love:
Or old bands like Trixter when they put out a new one:
And I have discovered more bands since finding this place and the CMR, Christian bands I never knew existed. But none of them are new, all of them are older bands that are long gone or bands that have that old sound. I tried Decyfer Down, Skillet, etc and none of them did anything for me.
But for me new finds are actually "old favorites" that I didn't know about. Stuff I never would've given the time of day back in the 80's (Mad At The World, the CMC's, John Gibson, etc).

I wish a few more people would put out some Christ centered music in the vein of that Trixter and Reckless Love!

Look at all that discussion I caused!
Well, it's concerning to know that I'm in the minority in this. MikeInFla, I hear you - I consider finding old music I've never heard the same as finding new music.
And that's the problem. Any music I've never heard before just bores me. Or maybe more accurately, doesn't hold my attention.
I'm so overwhelmed with work and other stuff that I just don't have much space in my head left to process music I've never heard.

Agree because both of those releases from those bands are right up my alley. Such good classic sounding melodic rock. Messenger is a good Christian band but I believe they only have one EP (that I had to buy on iTunes because I couldn't find a CD copy).

Yes. To me new music are those 2 videos above. And new Stryper, new Saint, Bloodgood or even new Journey, REO and the like. New music from classic bands or new bands like Reckless Love with a Classic sound are the only styles I am interested in at least rock music-wise. But I have discovered other styles the past 10 or so years and since I got back into vinyl records I have been listening to some Ray Charles, Les Baxter, Herb Alpert and more. And that stuff is definitely not new but it's new to me!

I got the impression he was talking about this Messenger (based on the other bands mentioned). http://angelicwarlord.com/reviews/m/messenger14.html

The psychology behind music is really interesting.
The reason (not the ONLY reason) we music lovers identify strongly with certain bands/artists during a certain period in our lives is the music's power on the brain to trigger happy memories. Whether conscious or subconscious, a song can activate serotonin if that song was imprinted on our memories during an earlier, and usually easier time in life. So in basic terms, a song we casually liked as a carefree teenager, one that we perhaps listened to when we were doing fun stuff, can, 20+ years later bring about a good feeling in us, not far removed from seeing an old toy we used to play with as a child.
Now, with that said, we gather all those classic songs in our collection that we loved at an earlier time, and want more - cuz all humans instinctively want "more". When we get a new album of a genre we like, we may not be as giddy about it as those earlier bands we're familiar with. This is cuz it's not imprinted on our minds yet. It is actually possible to create MORE nostalgic music by listening to albums during some good times or good experiences in our lives... then putting those albums away for 10 years, pulling them back out and listening again. You've conditioned your brain to make a NEW nostalgia.
For example. I love Van Halen. First, cuz they're talented and those first 6 albums rock ! But for me they're also associated with growing up with my brothers, and going to a VH concert with my brothers. Today, when I hear a VH song, I not only dig the talent and the song itself, but my brain associates it with a good feeling of a good memory. Later, I hooked up with my wife in 1995 and we listened to Wes King, as well as The Mavericks (country band) - now, I dig Wes, but never liked country. However, today, I can listen to The Mavericks and really enjoy them - due to the nostalgia and good memories created back when Lisa and I met.
So it is possible to take an album that you don't have a strong feeling towards, and play it often during a current good time... then wait a few years and listen again. You WILL have those "feelings" again and enjoy listening to that album.
