We've also done something similar to this in the past, but in my lack of originality lately, we're doing it again - this time in a POLL.
If I did this correctly, you should be able to choose multiple choices and pick FIVE. These 5 are your favorite top 5 styles within metal/rock.
(Sorry, it only allows me up to 15 choices... so you're stuck with what's there)

I will say though that doom/death is my favorite though that's a bit of a sub-genre...

I could only pick four....it was a toss up between Goth, Stoner & Pop Metal for 5th place. I also dig what many consider classic American Power Metal, but don't really care for the most of the modern Euro-style Power Metal.

CLASSIC METAL/ROCK is in the lead for # 1 amongst everyone here.
I imagine that would be defined as the original rock and metal sounds that defined early heavy metal - with all other genres splintering off these classic original sounds.
I've watched 2 long documentaries on Heavy Metal (Story of [8 hours long] and Evolution of [2 or 3 hours]) and both seem to point to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin for the dawning of all the Rock/Metal we have today. If that's true, then it was a DOOM/STONER band and a PROGRESSIVE HARD ROCK band that we owe our thanks to for the late 70s and 80s metal we all came to love so much.
Thoughts ?

I think that's about right (Black Sabbath & Led Zeppelin). I also think a big nod goes to The Beatles & The Rolling Stones. While far from metal, both bands pushed the boundaries of what was considered "heavy" or "outrageous" in rock and roll...leaving the door open for Hard Rock and Metal to step on through.
