I was watching a Canadian show the other day and the host was interviewing the secular band BNL (Barenaked ladies). I can't say that I have every been a fan of their music, but they said something I found interesting. It seems their new album will be available in 3 formats. Seems you can buy a cd, download the mp3 files, or buy a memory stick (presumably with the songs at mp3 files on the stick).

Has anyone heard of another band selling ther music on memory sticks or USB flash drives?

WHY would anyone want to do that? Buy the mp3s and put them on your own stick. Or pay $$$ to have a stick with the band's logo. Rolling Eyes

I think its kind of neat. Kind of a combination of the best of both worlds. You get the mp3s but you also get something physical with it.

I think it would probably depend on how much they sold the memory stick for. One of the band members was suggesting it was a more portable version then cds. You could plug into your computer at home, and then at work, put other stuff on it etc. He almost went to so far as to encourage limited file sharing.

A lot of artists know that to continue selling music that they are going to have to embrace some file sharing. We did it as teenagers. We recorded stuff off the radio and copies tapes for our buddies. And, when they got the cash, they bought a physical cassette.

I used to record stuff from the radio all the time when I was a teenager. I would record our local metal shop show on Saturday nights. Then I would listend to the tapes for a few weeks, until I could collect enough money to go out and buy the albums.

I used to listen to Metal Shop on Saturday nights as well! Are you sure it was a local show? What I listened to was a nationally syndicated show.

The one I listened to was hosted by one of our local DJ's, and you could actually call in with requests. They would also showcase local metal/hardrock acts, so I'm sure it wasn't the national one. But it certainly wouldn't surprise me if it was based on (or at least inspired) by the syndicated show.

I too listened to Metalshop back in the day. Still had some tapes until a couple months ago.

Rockline was another big one.
