Isn't most of his stuff "dark"... heck even MATW was pretty dark feeling...

I finally got this over the weekend and I'm listening to it this morning for the first time. I expect it is going to be a "grower". Great song writing (and talent), also very eclectic (as others have stated). I wish more Christian musicians where making music that sounded heart-felt and more original like this recording (not the cookie-cutter Hillsong stuff that I just can't tolerate anymore).

My copy arrived late last week. My first thought is that it is a bit eclectic and outside the box but in a good sense. I hear a wide array of musical influences here, including same darker stoner groove elements along with some hard rock, classic rock and even progressive rock at times. Tying everything together are some modern/alternative/grungy flavorings.
Am I out of line in terms of these comparisons?
All in all I like the CD and am looking forward to how it grows on me with repeat listen.
The problem, however, is that I am not that familiar with the artists back catalog (Rose's stuff never 'clicked' with me in the past). So what albums in Rose's repertoire does this best compare to?

It doesn't. The closest would be if you took "Into The Unknown" and mixed it with "Crazy Little World". This new album is what would have been had those two albums been mixed together.
Also on this front, Randy has announced that a new Kickstarter program will begin and that a new MAD AT THE WORLD album will surface! I am stoked as long as it doesn't sound like their first two or final albums. If it rocks, even if it is different, I am going to love it!

Randy's first few solo outings definitely had a stoner/doom (almost Danzig) vibe to them. But he has released a few albums that were not at all in that vein (such as Crazy Little World, which almost had a retro hippy or 60's psychedelic kind of vibe and sounded a little more like later era MATW). Then he did a project called "Mothership" that I have only heard a few tracks of...what I remember of it also had a bit of a 60's vibe to it (blended with 90's alternative), see below.

"Songs for the Ritually Abused" is like taking all of Randy's material and filtering it into one album. I na good way.

I'm a little confused by your response, do you mean the new MATW album will be in the style of the first two pop albums?

I wanted to give you guys an update on our soon to be Mad at the world kickstarter campaign. Depending on your support M.A.T.W. will be releasing a series of 3 records spanning from the first release, a synth pop record along the lines of Depeche Mode/kraftwerk. pending the success of our first campaign the second release will cover the sound and influences of the next 2 M.A.T.W records. The third and final of the series (this will be the third campaign) will be an all out M.A.T.W. rock record. I've received a lot of messages over the past few years for a M.A.T.W reunion, a big percentage of our fans found us in the techno/synth realm, so thats where it will start again. For my fellow head bangers out there, you will need to support the first 2 in the series of 3, to get to that point. As you know my brother and in keeping with tradition of the first record will do this together, the song writing will be 50/50, we will collaborate, and sing and perform off each others music. With the proper support the next 2 campaigns will have some of the rest of our MATW member playing on it- which is awesome. What I didn't want to do is a MATW greatest's hit's record - we have all ready done that, we wanted to do something new, fresh, something unexpected thats what we used to be famous for. it took a lot of convincing to get Roger to want to do another MATW record, but I reminded him what it was like to record, and write together, and how the topics of suicide have actually sadly enough increased and the world that we wrote the early MATW songs in has changed drastically for the worse. So, it's the perfect time to be Mad At The World again. If Mad At The World has touched your life in any or all of the years we recorded records, then lets see what he have to say now - trust me we have a lot to sing about - Thanks Roger, and Randy Rose - Please Share This Everywhere.

So he EXPECTS the headbangers to support the techo-pop crap that we don't like in order to get a real rock record? Not this one! I didn't care for those first two albums of MATW. Apparently, not enough fans did or their label wouldn't have urged them to go rock in the first place. It is that middle realm where they had their biggest success and I wouldn't rock that boat too much.

Good to have some clarification. That will probably mean I am out of any kickstarter though. I'm not at all interested in any synth-pop music (from anyone). I do hope they get enough fans to make the albums happen.

No, the new Rose is different. But, if you think about where he was to start with and the new record, it feels more like a natural progression to me.
