Subject: Remastering an X-Sinner album Thu Jul 14, 2016 5:21 pm
Since I've been tweaking some of the albums I own, I have decided to tackle "World Covered In Blood" and see if I can make it sound better. I like the songs on this X-Sinner disc, but the overall sound is demo-ish to me. The guitars have a lot of crackle due to being recorded too hot. The bass drum and bass are almost not in the mix. I am going to see if I can bring that out and reduce the crackle some.
I may do their first two just to bring them up to more of today's standards.

That sounds very interesting. I hope you are very content with the sound of this album.

I hope that I can improve it, anyway. The sound quality of it always has bothered me.

I would certainly love to hear their first two albums brought up to current mastering sound levels. I have several of those old albums that are just much quieter than the newer stuff. Makes it difficult to listen to a long playlist when the volume drops suddenly.

I brought them up a little but am not sure that there really was much improvement. Seeing that the bass and drum levels are up there pretty good, I am afraid to jack them up too much. I may try it anyway just for giggles.

I was able to remove SOME harshness from the cymbals on "World Covered In Blood". They were recorded too loud and there isn't much I can do to drop that. I was able to draw out the bass and bass drum frequencies, but they still are not anything like the first 2 X-Sinner albums. With those two, I could easily maximize volume, add a little low end, and still make it feel like you are hearing the original recordings. Overall, though, this whole back catalog has improved and will be what I listen to from now on.

It seems harder to make this album good.

It seems harder because the sound quality wasn't great to begin with. The cleaner and better sounding mix you have to begin with makes all the difference with mastering. As the old saying goes, you cannot polish a turd. Its still a turd no matter how shiny it gets. With this album, it isn't a total waste, but a better mix would have made a huge difference in tonal qualities with the finished product.
As someone who has released albums that were not sonically their best, I recognize some of the same issues with this X-Sinner album that I have had with my Mission of One releases.

Sir, Myth Busters proved that adage wrong.

Well, that would constitute a discussion on what is a "turd" and what is "manure" Their samples were dried so to me that would classify that as manure. Let them pick up a fresh one that is still steamy moist and polish that and we'll call it busted.
