It's hard when a band has a history like Guardian for fans to put aside the past works that they liked so much and evaluate a new record on its own merits. This is one of those times. I like Guardian's first 4 albums so much. I didn't really enjoy Bottle Rocket all that much, though I don't think it's the steaming pile of crap that many others do.
When I first heard Almost Home, it sounded so much like Bottle Rocket, with a little Buzz thrown in, that I had a hard time not being disappointed. I was hoping when they returned it would be more in the Fire and Love or Miracle Mile sound. However, after setting this album aside after a few listens, I returned to it this morning for the first time in months. I was pleasantly surprised. If this was a new band that had no history with me, I wouldn't have any trouble enjoying this record. It's a good record!
