Subject: What is with all the screamo junk !!!! Fri Jul 29, 2011 12:11 pm
What is with all this screamo junk. Doesnt anyone sing anymore? Besides with the way the screamo it Who knows what they are saying. They could be reciteing there grocery list for all I know. I got plane tickets to go to florida to see Godzfest and all the good bands have backed out and all that is left is the bands are screamo hardcore metal core or what ever is the new title of the month.
I thought we were supposed to be sharing a life changing message, how can that be when you can't understand it. Ya I know you can get bits and pieces of it here and there.
But isnt time we as christians should be setting the trend instead of following it. Don't we serve the creator who in everything is made. Why can't we set the standard for a change and let the world hear and understand what we are trying to say!!!
Sorry guys Thanks for letting me vent!!!

I'm on board with you on this one. But others probably won't agree.
I made an statement a few years ago (on another board) that it sounded as if bands were running out of singers with talent, and just decided to shout or yell their lyrics.... It seemed to me like this evolved into the "core" type bands we are inundated with now where hardly anybody sings intelligible lyrics anymore.
The rebuttal I received from many fans of these genres is that they are so used to listening to the music that they can actually understand the lyrics.....
Maybe they have a valid point.....I just dont plan to try it out.

I think we have to make music as Christians that speaks to every audience. However, it seems that unless you like CCM that you have to endure more and more screamo and core vocals. They are horrid, and I just don't buy bands that do this with most of their vocals. Disciple is the only band that I really like that does the more extreme vocal style. The rest of it, to me, is pretty much garbage. Great music ruined by sorry vocals.

I like disciple and most of the music these screamo bands play is tight and very good. I enjoy the music side of it allot it is just the vox I can't handle. Thanks again and let me vent. I know it is not my place to judge it just gets frustrating sometimes because I like my metal as much as the next guy.
Maybe I am just getting old ha ha!!!!

Now now, don't hate
Just because you don't enjoy hardcore, metalcore, screamo etc., doesn't make it any less "Christian" than Chris Tomlin. CCM has it's audience, rap has it's audience, and this stuff has it's audience. For example, even though you can't understand it and don't like it, there are a ton of us who do like and understand the words. For example, here's an excerpt from the new album "thegodmachine" by Phinehas (my vote for AOTY by the way):
Quote :
From One End of the Sky to the Other
Part the dark sky that keeps me from Your eyes Even as the darkness descends/my cry came to Your ears As my heroes fail me they leave me to fend on my own My cry came to Your ears the earth withers beneath me I'm always looking towards the clouds i know we are not alone I can't help but feel You in my bones When all is dead and gone, Your love will still remain From one end of the sky to the other you burn your banner
Cords of the grave, snares of death cannot take me from You I see the eyes of the empty, they form an eclipse above me Until i find safety in Your memory safety in Your memory safety in Your memory safety in the memory of Your faithfulness Bright lights are breaking through the sky Dark clouds are pouring from Your feet Seas and valleys all run dry,so reach through the sky and capture me My cry came to Your ears Your love saved no mercy for Yourself
If you ask me, some of these hardcore bands have just as strong if not stronger messages than lots of modern rock bands, and you don't have to worry about muddied up messages to please mainstream crowds. Here's another excerpt from a band called Hands:
Quote :
"I Will"
Rise, from the quiet I will rise. I can't bare anymore of the silence.
I feel sick at how jaded I've become.
Can you feel the anger in my heart? I can't believe this is me.
I built my house on shaking ground, and lit a match to watch it burn. Set me free.
Rest my soul in you alone.
Rise, from the quiet I will rise!
Take my hand.
Give me the faith to move mountains. Give me the strength to rebuild.
Help me become a better man. Help me to understand your will.
Let it rain. To remind me that there is something more.
I could quote hardcore/metalcore bands with messages such as this all day. I understand everyone's concern with hardcore music and if you don't like it, no biggie. Everyone has their own personal taste in music and worships God in their own way. Some people sing their hearts out with beautiful melodies and others scream God's love at the top of their lungs.
Oh, and I forgot one more thing. There is a big difference between genres such as hardcore and metalcore. Hardcore for instance is pretty much all screaming with little melody and utilizes the "breakdown" much more than any other "core" music. Metalcore is actually my favorite. It usually includes complex and technical guitar melodies (dual guitars are often used). The choruses and some bridges are usually sung as opposed to the rest of the song which is screamed (not always the case though). Many bands go the extra mile and add guitar solos (For example, Phinehas utilizes the guitar solo better than anyone I have ever heard...classic metal included). I'll include a video starting at the guitar solo at the end of this post. Metalcore does utilize the "breakdown" but not quite as much as hardcore.
I'm not writing this post as a rebutal to anyone or calling anyone out. I just wanted to explain why I enjoy this kind of music so much. I understand some people just don't enjoy this kind of music and that's totally fine!
Here's the video I promised (I even included the beautifully sung chorus too). Just start the video at 1:26
Lyrics - A Pattern in Pain:
as i charge the bloody fields waiting for your hands to pierce the depths The world is stirring yet you keep silent to me This battle shakes the ground, but your voice could split the earth The world is stirring yet you keep silent to me
Eternity will never be long enough with you When every step i take feels so worn If heralds of glory sing the minute life begins to fade Then death is just a bridge between us
See the enemy line the hills so hide my fears from me The world is stirring yet you keep silent to me Like a burning wound it kills me that i haven't heard you in years The world is stirring yet you keep silent
All i am is a scar-laden body from those years you were gone Now You appear to me faced with suffering death You restore this porous heart that bleeds every time it beats Your suture lives in me
There must be something You wished me to see, a pattern in this pain
I see a pattern, i see You in this pain
I've waited for years for what a brush with death has shown me I will trust in Your grace that speaks of the end As my life begins to fade i know Your blood was the bridge, the bridge between us Your blood was the bridge between us

I knew I wasn't the only one. Thank you my other brothers.
This is MOSTLY a generational thing but I do know people in their late 30's that enjoy the screamo and 'core' genre.
People that know me, know that I MUST be able to understand the sung words WITHOUT referring to the written lyrics.
That's because I am OLD SCHOOL.
But I will say and agree with above comments that the CHRISTIAN screamo sub-genre offers a place for Christians and potential new believers that would be listening to secular bands otherwise. This fills a void for them.
I embrace any CHRISTIAN musician/artist/vocalist that bravely carries the torch.

No shame bro! I think you're probably right about it being mostly a generational thing. Come to think of it, I know A LOT of people my age who don't enjoy the classics such as Stryper, Whitecross, Bride, etc. because of the soaring high pitched vocals. I just happened to be blessed enough to enjoy both extremes.

I like the metal instruments of most screamo bands, and tried real hard to get into the vocal style for my son's sake (a few years ago when he was into that)... buuuuut, can't say I care to listen to screamo anymore and pretend I like it. Matter of fact, I hate it.
Long live 80s metal !!

Well said brother, and I for one do not think that fans of hardcore/metalcore/deathcore etc. are fools.
To each their own....variety is the spice of life.
