I listed my first event cache yesterday. We are starting a small geo-club in a 3 county area to help draw folks out to find our caches, bring more event caches to us, and to find other cachers who want to discuss our sport and go caching together. This will be our first event!

The weather was good, so time to go out for geocaching.
We have found the DNF nano cache of two weeks ago and 4 others.
Only one DNF of a serie of 24 caches.

That must be fun to start a small geo-club.
Was it nice the first event of the geo-club?

The creek cachers were super effective! Thumbs Up

Weather's been down to -20°C over the last few days, so no geocaching. Not that I can go anywhere, anyway. Razz

Attending? I am hosting one for the first official meeting of C.A.C.H.E.--Cumberland Area Cache Hunting Enthusiats. We are doing a short meet & greet to fulfill our being able to get a cache on Feb. 29. If you grab a cache on that day, you will get a digital souvenir from Groundspeak.

Grabbed 4 more yesterday. I got three with the wifey, and she grabbed a 4th one nearby one that I had already done. We were super close to it, so she wanted one more. I might get her hooked yet. Later last night, we went shopping with her mom. I slid away to look for one that I had DNF'd previously during the week. In truth, it was easier in the dark.

I am at 1575 now.

Geocaching is kinda spur-of-the-moment some times, and planned out other times. I like the flexibility.

Agreed! I like that I am only competing against myself. I like that I can do this as often as I want or as little as I want. I finally found a sport that I am somewhat good at.

That's a good question.
Why you love geocaching?

For me it started at a time when I had a lengthy back injury and could no longer cycling and long walks could make.
We bought a GPS in summer and some months later we started with geocaching.
The first find was cool.
Last year we became very enthusiast and started to find more and more caches.

What I really like is everywhere in the world you can find geocaches.
When we go on vacation there always are tons of caches to find.
You are outsite and come on places you never have been without searching for geocaches.

That is always a plus. It is a great way to exercise if you have enough caches in your area that you can hike or ride a bike to. Sadly, the closest ones to me now are at least 20 miles away. I have found everything in my area and now am branching out to other towns/cities.

Vonnie, we also grab a few on vacations. I try to break up a long drive with a few easy park and grabs. Then, while we're out enjoying our vacation, we grab a few more. We are going back to the Smokey Mountains in March for a couple of days and will grab quite a few then.

That's what we do too.
We are going to ski at the end of next week and I hope there's time to grab some more caches.

Cool to go to the Smokey Mountains.
At one day I hope to see them real, with my own eyes.

Compared to the Alps, you will be disappointed. They look more like hills when compared to the Alps or even the Rocky Mountains.

The Alps are wonderful, but not all mountains are high in the Alps.
In some parts of Switzerland and Austria are the mountians not so high.
But mountains are mountains and I really like them.

There is a reporter for The Tennessean, the largest newspaper in Nashville, that is doing an article on geocaching. He wants to find out more as to why Feb. 29th is such a big deal for geocachers, and he has asked to interview me. I think that's pretty cool!

I guess it depends on whether they decide to actually run the piece or not and whether the article goes on the newspaper's website or the writer's blog.

I am waiting until I have a Garmin in the house again so I can go geocaching. I sent the Etrex back to be replaced with a new one. I thought, at first, that I was only getting a refurbished one. So, I ordered a new Garmin Dakota 20. It will be here Tuesday.

With the Etrex, the folks at Garmin decided to give me a new Etrex 30 instead. They are going to use mine, and 99 others returned to do testing to fix a problem with the compass and distance. If you drop below 2 MPH, they will hang and will not catch up until you speed up or power off/reboot the machine.

Found 5 caches today.
And one TB.

Cool to get a new Garmin.
We want a new GPS too.

Wasn't it better they have tested the compas and the distance of the Etrex 30 before they sold them?

They should have, but Garmin is not known for testing and developing new products to the point of having all the bugs worked out. They use the first buyers of any new product as beta testers to tell them where the kinks are. Then they fix them and install the fixes on later units. I should have waited on buying the Etrex 30.
