Can I just rant a little bit?

For years now, I've wondered, thought about and prayed about a career I want to pursue. I don't just want a job - I want something that when I'm old and about to die that I can look back on and be glad I spent my time doing that.

For years, I keep thinking about a certain career that I think I would like. I drift to other things but I keep coming back to this one particular career. It would take a Master's degree, which I don't have and have waited on starting because of the cost and, frankly, if I didn't want to pursue that career I don't want to get the degree.

Now, I'm pretty certain that I want to pursue it and there's a part time opening at a local organization that only requires a Bachelor's! I want this so bad but it seems like lately everything I want to work out doesn't.

Why are we so stubborn and stupid? I should have went back and got my MBA ten years ago like everyone told me...

Okay, now that I've calmed down a bit, I emailed the person responsible for hiring this position and while typing the email realized I have a personal and professional reference that works there already. I included her info and we'll see what happens.

I was in a similar boat.

I wanted my career and completed by degree, but it also required the completion of two professional exams if I wanted to own/run my own company (very small company).  I successfully completed my first exam right after college and then sat around for another 15 years without taking the second.
I finally did complete that second exam, but why did I wait so long to do it?

Right! I knew in college that I wanted to do this - I even told my wife before I graduated that I wanted to. Now, almost 11 years later I'm regretting not getting my Master's. She told me to, my dad told me to, friends told me to. Now it'll be way more difficult with work, kids, etc...

But at least I have some direction.

The P.E. exam, I take it.  I did the first exam as well pretty much out of college but haven't done the full P.E. exam.  I haven't mainly because my profession (plastics engineer) doesn't really need it.

It's not too late though is it ? I'm not on board with much of what's being discussed here, but can't you still follow that dream ?  You're not old. Or am I missing something ?

Be careful, Jim.  You've always dreamed of being an artist.  Despite your back condition, you can still pursue that as well.

Dang, don't ya hate when people turn the tables on you!  lol!

Yeah, the conversation kinda derailed...

I was more just ranting that I'm mad at myself for not listening to other people (and myself as well) for not just staying in school and getting my MBA. I'd be doing what I've wanted to do for a long time now, and would have been for at least a few years.

And no I'm not too old - I'm only 35. But, I have a wife and kid to support and I'm concerned it will be tougher now to pursue.

On a side note, I got an email back and they filled the position... bummer.

Yup, the P.E. exam.  What's funny is there are a ton of engineering fields that don't require a P.E., and most of them make more money that Structural/Civil engineers (Chemical, Industrial, Nuclear, Petrochemical, Aeronautical, etc).  But if you are Civil, or Structural (or Mechanical/Electrical for HVAC/electrical for systems in buildings) you pretty much must have the P.E.  heck, now they are trying to make it so that you can't work on anything over three stories unless you go back and get an S.E. license (Structural Engineer)...which is a 16 hour exam.  I'm not doing that.

Sorry to derail your thread Ish.

No table turning here... I did pursue art, and am still doing art to this day... I just made the mistake of not listening to my guidance counselor in '87 to study "computer graphic art".
As for a career in it, my career days are over. I am disabled AND retired  Twisted Evil - no interest in doing anything I don't wanna do.

Sung to the tune of Crazy Train:

Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people posting on boards
Maybe, it's not too late
To stay on topic and not take the bait

What is that dude thinking?
What's goin' on in that head?
I'm postin' off the rails on a crazy thread
I'm postin' off the rails on a crazy thread

I read threads from the preachers,
And threads from the fools
I've seen lots of forums
Who make their own rules
What's with this condition to be right all the time?
Don't know that to say here, so I'll just blink like a mime

Dude what are you thinking?
Is that skull full of lead?
I'm postin' off the rails on a crazy thread
I'm postin' off the rails on a crazy thread

I know what's going wrong with everything
You just gotta read my words, yeah, yeah

Heirs of a flame war,
That's what we've become
Another thread causing troubles,
My fingers are numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
What's going on here is stealing my air

Some folks still not thinking
Point and click causing dread
I'm postin' off the rails on a crazy thread
