I am on the annual hunt for Christmas songs not well known by others. I have a playlist of a few that were popular at one time but forgotten or almost unknown. Do you know of any Christmas songs that are less well known but GOOD? I don't care so much about the style.

Did you hear Stairways christmas song last year. I thought that was really solid.

I like that a lot better than their "Christmas Merry Christmas" song they did a couple of years ago.
One of the things that Stairway needs to learn is that we want to hear the low end in the mix. On their two Christmas songs, you get this wall of guitars and the bass and drums are so far back in the mix. Compared to other bands in the same genre, it makes their recordings sound more like demos than finished tracks.

I'm really digging this song by Patrick Alexander. (I heard it on Roxx's latest Christmas compilation.) Does anyone know anything about him? I wouldn't mind checking out more of his tunes if they're in this vein.

Patrick and I were friends on FB when he released this album. We had a friend in common. I don't know much about him except for that he's a decent fellow and a good bass player. I haven't seen or heard of any other works from him.

Let me open this up a bit. When I am asking for more obscure Christmas songs, I want songs that are fun or upbeat. I don't care if they are metal or even hard rock. While I don't venture out of hard rock, metal, or rock blues often, during Christmas I am open to way more styles. I don't mind big band or jazz. I don't mind some country if it's got a good beat to it. Shoot, I will even take CCM as long as it is a fun, not draggy song that isn't just a rehash of the same 12 songs they play over and over on Christmas stations.
Now, let's go build an incredible playlist people!!!! You have no other important things to do except to help me! Santa said so!!! LOL

I grew up with a dad who loved classic country music and some bluegrass. This one isn't so obscure to me. I heard it quite frequently growing up.

Still cant beat “o holy night”. Thats the best christmas song. “O come all ye faithful” is a close second. “Angels we have heard on high” comes in third. Some of these ancient christmas songs are hard to play too. I have 3 to play in church sunday and they are finger twisters. You are probably already familiar with it, but Future of Forestry had some good Christmas songs with a bit of a rock vibe to it. Google their christmas stuff if you are not familiar with them.

Nectarine - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Nectarine - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (corrected)
I cannot find it anywhere line. I have it from a Heaven's Metal compilation I *think* you can download that legally (shrugging)

I'm sure it wasn't intended to be a Christmas song, but ...

Not sure about someone looking so .... unholy (?) ... singing about Christ. But I suppose if RJD can sing for Kerry Livgren. (shrugging again)

Probably heard this; aren't you the big Neal Morse fan?
