You may have noticed from previous posts that I am something of a compulsive organizer—when it comes to my music collection anyway.
Recently I realized that I screwed up.
In an effort to hurry-up-and-get-cool-new-songs on my metal playlists, I didn't always fully classify them into subgenre. So now I don't know if "metal" means traditional heavy metal, or undetermined subgenre.
Oh well...if this means I have to relisten to a hundred headbangers, so be it.
Honestly that wouldn't be so bad, but my collection also has 2600+ downloads/rips with even less notation. They come in faster than I can sort.

Sounds like it was just an excuse to re-listen to every song you have! Not at all a bad thing

You try to label all the genres of metal? That is quite an undertaking! I don't even know if I know all of the metal genres.
I classify mine into two categories: metal I like, and metal I don't like.
That makes it easy enough for me to keep up with.

I finally put everything on Discogs, kind of nice to have them organized

Oh, that's what the ratings are for. "Meh" is 2 stars, as I've deliberately skewed it. (If it's in my collection, it should be biased toward stuff I like. I don't like all the stuff in my collection, as some of it is just to have an example of a certain genre, or Christian stuff of a style I don't personally like but might be useful for sharing as a witness sometime.) Half a star is truly loathed, but I keep it for the reason above. Four stars and up make my "favorites" list. Five star songs are those ones I will very often replay at least once every time they come up in the shuffle.
Going from the top of my head, I've got heavy, ambient, melodic, symphonic, thrash, power, nu, speed, core, black, doom, sludge. Hmm, let me check if that's all of them... Nope: progressive, industrial, gothic, and groove.
I wish I could automatically pull BPM from somewhere. It would make certain things much easier.
Hey, I told you guys I was anal about my metadata!

Yeah if there is a fusion/crossover sound, I just use both tags. For example, progressive gets slapped on quite a few of the longer more experimental sounding songs, regardless what the band's general style is. "Speed doom" sounds interesting, "black death" not so much! LOL!

The band Nomad Son is an excellent example of speed doom.
And blackened death metal isn't that bad.
