Adding effects in Audacity is easy.  Highlight the track you want to add the effect to, then click Effects and choose the effect.  You can even highlight just a portion of the track and add the effect to just that segment.

How are the adjustment toolss?  I know some VSTs will give you what looks like old school knobs and buttons to do these with.  I am starting to learn about recording with a DAW and using plug-ins, but I am in search of decent freebies.

Most of them are just sliders.  Like the 3 Band EQ gives Bass, Mid, Treble and use a slider you click and drag.  In Reaper you will get more plugins with knobs and buttons and graphics that look like foot pedals and such.

One thing I like in Audacity is you can just highlight part of the track and apply effects just to the highlighted section.

Reaper can't do that?

I have both but am learning Audacity first as our guitarist has that, too.  It will make it easier to share project files and mix later on.

Reaper's effects work differently and I haven't played with it enough to figure it out.

I haven't either.  I did figure out how to make the Zoom R24 work as a card reader for my laptop.  I was able to take a song I am working on and bring the tracks over to the computer so that I can work on them from there.  I mostly want to get the guys I play with to learn it and let us record it as a group.  I think the guitars can be much better from there even though the Mick Mars amp sound I dialed up through my Spark amp sounds pretty nice.

Luckily, I am learning the DAW by using demo versions of stuff and will build finished songs once the band knows their stuff at least as individuals.

Is there a way to add a click track to an existing MP3 or WAV file so that I could record other parts using that as a guide?

I ask because I recorded some stuff on my Zoom unit and did them with a drum machine.  I want to be able to add a click track so I can get real drums recorded for this.

I don't think you can add a click to a an existing file unless you recorded a click and then mixed them down.  You can generate a click track in Audacity.  I'm pretty sure you can with Reaper, too.  I've haven't used them.  In Audacity if you click Generate and then Rhythm Track you can set the timing for a click track.

So then if I have recorded something to the Zoom's internal card, then I am just going to have to redo everything in order to get it on a click track.  Drat!!!!

If the drums are programmed you can make a click using the same tempo.  You'll just have to align your recorded tracks to be on beat.

It took me a long time to figure out how to do that.  Of course, I can't get the Zoom or my Behringer interface to actually work with Audacity.  So, I am more than frustrated and am to the point of not wanting to do this anymore.  I worked for hours and couldn't get either of them to be able to record a track.  I've watched a lot of tutorials and read message board fixes.  Nothing.

I am almost ready to become an old person and just stop having anything to do with anything techie that I will have to learn how to use.  This should not be this stressful just to get something to work.

It shouldn't be that hard.  You should be able to set the recording device in Preferences to your Zoom R24 and be on your way.

I've got Audacity, but I don't use it enough to understand it!  I end up using videopad!  (I know, it's a bit daft, but I've used it enough for video editing that I know roughly what I'm doing.)

It wasn't just the Zoom.  I also have a Behringer 4 channel interface that wouldn't sync up to it.

Does the Behringer show up in Preferences?

I am trying again today to install the driver for the Zoom R24 I bought in hopes of using it as an interface.  I like having real knobs and sliders to work with.  I worked for hours the last time I tried with no avail to get Audacity or Reaper to recognize it.  I never got it to work.

That's basically what I have but mine shows the last input as 8.

I got it synced to both Audacity AND Reaper.  I had tracks recorded on the Zoom that I was able to transfer to Reaper, add a click track, sync up the BPMs, and save as a project file.  I was able to easily add effects in Reaper.  I think it is going to be my DAW of choice now.

Excellent!

I'm using Audacity to finish up the JC album to keep continuity but am using Reaper going forward.

Instead of using both, I am going with Reaper.  I found that the built in effects are just more intuitive to use for me.  I need to learn how to bus things together thru effects so that I could EQ guitars and different vocal tracks at the same time.

I'm not sure how to do that.  I know you can ctrl + click multiple tracks to select them and the faders will sync.
