I've tried this foul concoction several times spanning several years. If you like it, that is fine. You can have my share.
Nasty bits.
I'm pretty sure what I've tried is actually made with yams and not sweet potatoes.
I make it with red kumera (it's actually purple, but it's called red for some reason)

Noooooo! Not the CANnnnnn!!!!!!!! I'm going to have nightmares now. It's "Return of the Blob". Love me big berries cooked with orange zest. Yum. Eggnog? Meh. I'll drink it, but I'm just being social if I do. Devilled eggs?, Yum, so totally delish. I've never thought about having them for a holiday dinner though. Hmm. What's everyone's thoughts on sweet potatoes with brown sugar and marshmallows?
My wife absolutely loves the sweet potatoes (or yams) dripping in brown sugar and browned marshmallows. I am not a fan myself (to sweet for something that is supposed to be potato like).
Do you have Thanksgiving in New Zealand? I know that most countries don't have a Thanksgiving or Harvest Day type of celebration. Although the U.S. and Canada (along with The Netherlands, Germany, the UK and close to a dozen others) celebrate some sort of Thanksgiving not every nation does.
No. No Thanksgiving here, but I grew up with Thanksgiving in Canada. It's on the second weekend in October. There are no Pilgrims though. It's a harvest festival. Here, in NZ, we have something similar in June. It's called "Matariki." Traditionally it marked the Maori new year. It's a time for family and food and being thankful for the year that's past and the year to come.
Very interesting! So what do you remember eating for Canadian Thanksgiving. Where there other traditions involved with the holiday? Matariki sounds super cool, are there any traditional foods (or other traditions) associated with celebrating the holiday?

I had to look that up. Apparently it is a sweet potato variety that is most popular in New Zealand . Imagine that. Not even sure we can buy that variety in my area of the U.S.

In Canada Thanksgiving was hors d'ouvres for China, turkey, a bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, CRANBERRY sauce (Derek), sweet potatoes with brown sugar and butter, bread pudding, and some veg. For dessert we always had pumpkin pie followed by spice biscuits and tea. Traditionally, Matariki is celebrated with a hāngi -- a meal cooked in a covered pit over hot stones. It's usually chicken with kumera and a traditional bread. Now it's more varied. My family does a Thanksgiving-like meal, usually with roasted chicken and a leg of lamb and, very, very rarely, a turkey (but they're hard to come by here).

I do not hate those who cranberry sauce, nor do I hate the sauce itself. I just don't like it so I politely decline. Sauce on!

We have an overabundance of turkeys here. Quite a few hold positions in office.

Very cool! (not sure what you mean by hors d'oeuvres for China, I'm picturing eggrolls and crab rangoon)

I just meant we have lots and lots of appetizers (pickles, cheese, crackers, chips, dips, smoked salmon, chutneys.......)

That's funny. My wife does the same thing as well. She really likes to have a board with cheese and crackers and summer sausage or salami, along with chips and deviled eggs, cranberry bread (which is more like cake than bread), nuts, homemade fudge, and sometimes shrimp cocktail. If she ever got her hands on some good smoked salmon you can bet your sweet bippy it would be out there too.
