| I was just wondering....
I know songs sometimes copy riffs whether intentional or not. I have done intentional tips of the hat towards KISS and Poison not including parodies of George Thorogood and ZZ Top.
But, I was wondering if anyone would notice if you did a song or an album of songs with sounds alike riffs. What I mean is this: you write a song based off the riffs of well known songs but change the riffs so they are original but still are new creations. Would anyone notice? Would anyone care? Could you claim that you were merely trying to honor those great songs, or would you be branded a copycat? _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution. https://christianhardmusic.niceboard.com/

| I'm a little confused. If you change the riffs you aren't copying. Right? | |

True. But, if you keep the feel and make the riff similar, the mind will connect the dots. I have a couple of albums by this Christmas band that does this and puts traditional Carol's to classic rock hits....sort of. They copy riffs but morph them so that they sound alike but still are original. The fun is guessing who they are paying tribute to. For exame, if you took Bride's "Would You Die For Me" and morphed it to be different but still FEEL the same, would people notice? Would you get slammed for copying? It is one of many ideas I am toying with.

| I would certainly be interested in hearing it. I suspect a lot of musicians wouldn't even try pursuing you legally just because you probably aren't a big enough commercial enterprise to bother with....except Kiss they will sue you if even one of your songs sounds remotely like something they recorded (they did it to Bob Rivers who merely recorded a parody song of Rock N Roll All Night). _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Apologetix did a couple of their songs over the years. While not a household name, they do have a following. I wonder why they haven't bothered with them? Besides, a parody falls under the Fair Use Act as long as you give credit to the original writer's of the music. Weird Al had to defend himself against Michael Jackson and WON. it went to the Supreme Court if my memory serves me. You don't even have to get permission, but it does help. _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution. https://christianhardmusic.niceboard.com/ | |
