Anybody heard the new song that Stairway has released?  It is called "Lucy Fuhr" and you can hear it via YouTube.  I'm digging it and look forward to their new albums.

I've been listening to Stairway a bit the last couple of days.  I like their music, but something seems off.  Today while listening to my remaster of "On Hallowed Ground", I figured it out.  The drummer is not great.  He could easily be replaced by a drum machine.  His fills always seem out of sync with the riffs.  I think they could do better with a different drummer and bringing those tracks up in the mix a bit.

However, with my remaster, the drums and bass are louder than before.  I could have gotten those louder but would have lost some of the leads and vocals.  So, I just cleaned it up as best I could.

What's your favorite Stairway album?

Tough to pick between "No Rest:No Mercy" and "The Other Side of Midnight", both great albums.

I heard the Lucy Fuhr track and was very impressed, very heavy and melodic...I'm really looking forward to hearing more.

I love all their stuff, but my favourite a close call between "No Rest:No Mercy" and "Interregnum".  But every album has at least two or three great songs on it, and all the others are good too!

There's just something magical for me with the "On Hallowed Ground" album.  While it doesn't exactly sound like them, it FEELS like something that the Scorpions would have done.  A better overall production would have made that album so much more popular in my opinion.

I am remastering all of their albums for my own listening pleasure.  On the newer albums, this isn't really changing much.  It makes the drums stand out a bit more and takes some of the sharpness off the cymbals and guitars.  I am far from a serious audiophile, but I can tell a difference.  I don't know that a lot of people would, however.

I am most impressed with "On Hallowed Ground".  That album has always sounded demo-ish to me.  A better mastering job definitely makes this sound like a professionally done album.

Question for you all:  Was "No Rest, No Mercy" ever remastered and reissued?  I actually have their own pressing of this that was done in 1993.  I would love to hear this done better.

I am trying to also do "Bleeding Heart", but the sound is all over the place.  There are places where the cymbals are too loud in the mix causing ear fatigue.  Too much reverb on the overall project makes this sound like it was played in a cavern.  Add to this the fact that you cannot really hear the drums well and you have an album that has never really been a favorite.  I am going to really wrestle with this one to make it sound good.  I don't think that without a full remix that sounding great would be an option at this point.

No Rest: No Mercy was re-issued/re-mastered by Retroactive Records in 2005.

I thought so, but I couldn't remember.  I would like to hear that version and compare it to what I have done.
