- Now I wonder how long are you DJ for WMHD?
I'm starting my 5th year for this show, Rocksalt. I also did shows for almost 5 years when I was a student there and 2 years at my high school station so all told it looks like 11 years doing non-commercial radio so far.

- Or you contact bands to ask for CDs to play in your radio show.
You have to get a big knowledge of varied musicstyles.
I ask bands for their material if I think I'd play it. DJ-ing does help me stay much more up to date than I would otherwise, but I COULD be doing much more than I am, too.

- Do you have many listeners to your radio shows?
I doubt it, but there's more than I realize. Since it's a free-format college station we cater to unusual listeners. I have a few fans though.

- Do you get reactions of people who listen to your show?
Sometimes at concerts and a couple times from an old man at church!

- Do you make the playlist in one day or you start on Monday to think about the playlist for your new show.?
I used to plan them out for Rocksalt so they flowed well. After a couple years of that, I decided it was 1) taking too much of my time and 2) made the show less appealing IMO so now I just wing it every week. I will always play any new material I get in that week and I often have an idea of a few others songs I'd like to play if I remember.

- have you made special shows? For Easter or for Christimas?
Yes. All my Dec shows are all hard Christmas music. I also do a special Easter and Thanksgiving show.

- Or maybe with special attention for bands.?
Whenever I get a wild hair I'll do things like running through the alphabet (starting again in Jan), or a bunch of songs with the same title or one-man bands, or bands from a certain country/state or songs with the same theme or whatever else pops into my head that night.

- Or make a special to give a band extra attention?
Generally not but see above. I'll highlight bands that are playing concerts locally for several weeks beforehand and then the show after the concert. One of my wild hairs was to play a song from each of the bands featuring Christian Rivel. I'll also sometimes do a double play of a highly anticipated release, especially if I don't get it right away.

- Are there Christian band you never play?
Oh, yeah. There are plenty I've never heard of still, but I also very rarely play any that have vox I can't understand or lyrics that are barely Christian. I'm not too picky about the music, but the message is important.

- For me it would be tough to make every week a cool playlist with varied bands so all your listeners hear bands they really like.
Believe me, it's not easy for me either, but it's largely because I don't have everything on my laptop yet and I don't listen to what I do have. I've been pretty much playing from the same 1000 songs for a year when I have 5 or 6 times that much.
I am making a switch from Winamp 2.95 to Foobar2000 (my first show with this was last Sunday), which will help me organize and track the music I play better. Once I start going through the alphabet again in Jan I will load everything I'd play so I'll be pretty well set from then on.
