| I Finally joined all of you and got an external hard drive. I found a 2TB at Best Buy for $99 so I snatched it up. I backed up my entire CPU and loaded all of my mp3 music files and my about 1/4 of my wife's pictures on it......I have barely made a dent in this thing's capacity. I'm gonna rip all of my cds (almost 500) and load them on it as well. _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Now I'm not sure."

| I am using a 1TB hard drive. I love having everything on one drive. But, these are becoming a thing of the past as they are trying to sell people on storing their files "on the cloud". _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution. https://christianhardmusic.niceboard.com/ | |

| I have been offered the "1 year free cloud storage" from amazon, but I'm not all that keen on it just yet. I'm not really sure I would trust it right now as my primary storage.....maybe as a back-up. _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Now I'm not sure."

| Way to go Gar. What I like doing is grabbing a couple Gbs of tunes, mixing them on my iPhone and hooking it up to my truck's aux in. Quality is great and I don't hafta burn cd mixes anymore. I've just about reached 500Gb of music. I have the music (among all my backups and other stuff) on a 1Tb Western Digital at home, a Seagate portable velcroed to my laptop, a Maxtor attached to my Roku media center for TV, and a 1.5Tb WD at work. Can you tell I had a hard drive crash in the past ? If one crashes now, I'm set. May I recommend the free program Allway Sync ? It syncs your files for you should you change or update anything. Go to cnet.com and search it. Awesome program. | |

I thought that was just anit-virus/spam software. _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Now I'm not sure."

I don't have anywhere close the 500GB of music (you are an animal). I also have my digital albums burned to CDR as well as backed up at our server at work (although I'm waiting for them to tell me I have to remove it any day now). For some reason I just don't trust having those digital files in only one place. I almost lost an album like that.....I opened the album folder and all the songs were gone.....fortunately I had it on the server at work. Will check out the sync program. _________________ "I used to be indecisive.......... Now I'm not sure."

I thought that was just anit-virus/spam software. Norton 360 is a R.A.M. robbing virus, in and of itself.

The new Norton has an online storage option which I decided to take advantage of. I like the idea of an external hard drive, particularly if you have a major computer meltdown. But if an unexpected disaster should strike and you lose both your hard drive and external drive you are back to square one. With online storage you still have something to fall back on.

Agreed. As is McAfee. Dumped the big named expensive virus CPU suckers for free versions of Avast, Advanced System Care and Malwarebytes. Haven't had 1 problem in over 2 years. As far as files on HDDs, I cannot stress enough: BACKUP to more than 1 drive. It's not a matter of if, it's when will the Drive crap out on you.

| Wow, 2 TB would even hold my albums ripped as FLAC. I'm thinking that would only take < 700 GB. I haven't been invited for cloud storage nor would I use it for anything important. I can't imagine the pain of waiting to uploads GBs of info. I'd much prefer everything local even if I do run the risk of losing it all in a fire, tornado, etc. _________________ "If you are not concerned about your neighbor's salvation, you should be concerned about your own."

| I've only just bought a 1tb external hard drive after our main computer started going wrong. The computer was freezing after about 30 minutes, so I saved as much as I could to DVD (just missed some movie files that were too big) and then a relative who is a computer whizz took the computer away to sort it out (he's still got it, and working on it, going through a process of elimination). At that point I realised the importance of an external hard drive, so now everything is backed up, and we're using our old computer for everything until our new machine returns.
