Hey –
People have been asking me where I’ve been, so I thought I’d give a quick update… There’s not much to it. Pretty much, I’ve just gotten completely bored with the metal-side-project thing, and have returned the the kind of music I have played from the time I first picked up a guitar.
If you’re familiar with my music, you already know this – but I know I’m not exactly world-famous (LOL), so many of you don’t know this – but, I don’t actually come from a metal background.
The first band I recorded with was Asphyxia, back in 1997. We made a great little E.P. that was produced by Sponge guitarist Andy Patalan. It was heavy grunge. Very Alice-In-Chains-ish, and fit nicely into the AIC, Soundgarden, etc. sound that was big at the time. You can hear a song from our album at my site (www.iankeithhafner.com).
The next band I recorded/performed with was Scrub. This band was also heavy grunge. You can check out our music video for “Sunday Best” off our second album at my site, too. I played with these guys from 1999-2001.
Next, I played about a zillion shows with alternative rockers Outta The Belly from 2001-2003. We never made a proper recording, but we did some demo’s, and you can hear one of the songs at my site.
So, why tell you this? It’s not big deal to me – but some people have expressed surprise at the fact that my upcoming solo CD is grunge/alternative/heavy-downtuned-sludgy rock and not “metal” or “glam metal” or whatever you want to call it. So I wanted to explain that while I dig metal, and I listen to it – it’s not my background. It’s not that I’m departing from metal to play alternative……….rather, I played alternative/grunge FIRST (and I mentioned the bands/recordings above so as to differentiate myself from the plethora of metal bands who change to grunge and then claim they were never metal in the first place LOL).
Static Fuse, for example, was a side project for me. It was fun! I liked it! But it’s not a band… in fact, Sonia and I live in different states (I’m in MI, she’s in NJ). The Static Fuse record will, by the way, be coming out soon, as planned...
And all along, while I’ve played on metal projects here and there, I’ve also had my career as a local musician here in good ol’ Southeast Michigan, where I’m pretty well-known as the singer-songwriter type, playing coffee shops and small venues in our area.
Anyway, none of this is a big deal to me. I’m not one of those “genre purist” types, and I dig all kinds of music. I just thought I’d address things since some people have been asking.
If you want, check out “Apathy” from my upcoming CD “Apathetic Sunday” over at www.iankeithhafner.com and let me know what you think…
