Interesting book. Discusses songs that span the 40s up to today and how the sounds, melodies, solos, lyrics, and in some cases entire songs are "stolen" (
consciously or subconsciously). He even includes the lawsuits raised and settled by many artisits against other artists.
A little basic in it's writing by Timothy English.
However, my interest in the book and whipping thru it stems from my lifelong "ability" to instantly recognize a similarity - - or out-and-out rip off from a previous song.
Example: Zeppelin ripped off many previous jazz songs from way before the Zep formed. I'm taking the book an extra step and been downloading all the songs he discusses and recording just the segments that sound identical.
My own findings are many, but here are a couple I've discovered in the Christian genre:
"X-Sinner- Getchya" (the one featured on "Lightning strikes twice" comp)-at the very end the guitarist repeats the beginning of
"Daytripper" by the
Beatles. Also
The Newsboys fun song
"Shine"(
Let 'em see what you have got, make 'em wish that they were not, on the outside lookin bored) Has an
identical guitar tune from the older song:
Hot Chocolate – You Sexy Thing There are MANY more. I've collected quite a list and have about 40 songs downloaded so far, but if you know of any off the top of yer skull, post 'em here and I can add them to my list.
One day, when I have a full disc of these kind of examples, I'll mail copies out to everyone.... who's interested.
