PostSubject: John 16ish   Mon May 28, 2018 5:10 am

So I have a question for those of you who are good with bible interpretation. I meant to ask the Minister about this yesterday, but that didn't happen. On Pentecost Sunday, the Gospel reading was John 15: 26-27; 16:4-15. I expect the answer is really obvious, but what does the text mean when it says "because the ruler of this world has been condemned?" That doesn't sound right to me.

The relevant text is in John 16: 7-11:
"But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And [when he] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me, 10 and concerning righteousness, because I am going away to the Father and you will see me no more, 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned."

Speak oh wise ones of the CHM universe.

I have always taken the ruler as sin itself, not Satan.  Satan is a liar and wants people to believe he either doesn't exist or is the powerful lord of this earth.  Sin is what Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension condemned and removed for all believers.  Sin reigns in our mortal bodies and so many of the horrors of this life exist because of human choices.  Jesus' victory over sin is announced throughout the letters of Paul.

That's my take, anyway.

Satan is condemned, he just hasn't been punished yet.

Okay, now that puts a completely different spin on that whole chapter for me. I think I need to reread it with that new perspective in mind. Thanks Chris. Thanks Derek.
