PostSubject: Christians And TV/Movies   Tue Dec 27, 2016 6:11 pm

In the past ~five or so years, I've been really convicted by what I choose to put in my brain via what I watch on the TV screen.  Growing up, my parents were very strict with what I could/couldn't watch.  Then when I was old enough to choose for myself, I watched a lot of hard-R rated movies with plenty of foul language, violence, and sexuality/nudity.  At the time, it really didn't "bother" me and I had no qualms with it.  But as I've matured some in my faith, I find myself being more and more convicted with what I watch, especially when it comes to sex and nudity.  I know many "strong" Christians who watch all the very sexually explicit HBO shows like Game Of Thrones, Westworld, etc.  Is this proper?  My wife sent me a link to a very good blog article about this which I think makes a very solid argument against Christians watching such things.  (If you didn't read it, the gist of it is "If it would be intolerable for you to watch your wife acting out sexual deeds and sexual pleasure with another man, it should be equally intolerable for you to be entertained by watching anyone else simulate those deeds and that pleasure. To refuse to see such things is simply loving your neighbor as yourself, loving that actress as you love your wife.")  What do you guys think?  Is it relative (just because it's a sin for you doesn't mean it is for me) or is it absolute (Christians should never watch sexual stuff on TV)?

All I know is that we have to walk a careful line to be sure not to end up being too judgmental here.  It would be easy to point fingers at anyone making different choices of what they watch vs. what we do.

For me, sexual content bothers me.  Nudity, especially in the female form, bothers me because, as a man, I like it.  My flesh likes it.  So, I don't watch R rated movies.  I even pay attention to why movies receive a PG-13 as some of those can be super sexual as well.  Call me a prude if you must, but I feel that to watch something higher rated puts me on some shaky ground where my flesh desires something that the Lord would not wish me to receive.  So, I stay away from what I know is going to trip me up and cause me to sin.  I don't do this out of fear of what God will do to me if I sin.  I do it because I know it displeases Him and because it devalues and cheats my wife of my affections.

I have always been bothered by nudity and sex scenes in movies, even those that are just suggested. I remember being embarrassed when I went to see Revenge of the Nerds in the theater with a female friend that I wasn't even dating, and even now I don't even like seeing kissing in movies because they always feel they have to make them so passionate. Why can't they just be gentle "I love you" kisses, not "I want to jump your bones" tonsil-cleaning activities kisses!? LOL!!

All kidding aside, though, what I have tried to explain to my kids concerning why they should not view stuff like that is because one cannot "unsee" it; once it's in your head it will always be there. And don't kid yourself by pretending the enemy won't use that against you; you might forget virtually all the details of your life, but somehow you won't forget those images! When I was 18 I was at a party where an X-rated moving was playing, and I still remember certain scenes from that movie as if I watched it yesterday, even though I cannot even remember what the girl that invited me to the party looked like. I would give almost anything to have those images scrubbed from my memory!

So, while I want to avoid being judgmental, as Alldat suggested, my opinion is it is absolute. IMO there is nothing about watching other people have sex, or simply viewing other people "in the raw," that is glorifying to God.

Looks like you have your answer. Mine would be the same, but I also struggled with that for many years. Flee temptation. It's annoying enough that most actresses need to be poured into their outfits today.

I agree.

I have watched quite a few R-rated movies that turn out to be inappropriate and I almost always regret it.  Fortunately I have my wife with me (for most of them) and will help me out with the nudity stuff (because it really effects me poorly).  I will shut my eyes when those scenes appear and she will let me know what I can open my eyes again.  Heck it even happened last night watching some dumb television show, a Victoria Secret add (soft porn) came on tv and she had to let me know when it was safe to resume looking at the television.

We have even turned off a couple of movies because the "nudity/soft core porn" or even the language was just too much.
When our children where younger (4-16) we purged all of the R-rated movies from our video cabinet (expect for The Passion).  We figured if they could get into them when we weren't around then we didn't want them to have access to anything we wouldn't want them to see.

I try and never watch any movie that is more than a 12, for the reasons above and also the swearing, violence and general nastiness of it all.  But it's true what has been said, once it's in your brain you can't forget it.  Sometimes you can't even remember the film, but you definitely remember the scene!
One of the things I struggle with right now are games on the PS4, as GTA is a brilliant game, but it's really difficult to stay safe.  I tend to ignore missions and bad stuff, but just go round driving cars and shooting folk (okay, so maybe that's bad!), but inevitably some of the lesser missions that seem okay end up being R rated and it takes you in to the story.
People behind the movies and games definitely know how to pull us in, and sometimes it's really difficult to stop them getting what they want!

It sounds like maybe you have your answer but I can't seem to not share my advice (which a friend tells me confirms I'm called to be a pastor... ha ha.).

For me, it comes down to motivation and reason for the thing. The thing in this case being nudity. Why is someone nude in the movie or show?

I see naked people everyday (well, almost) as I work in healthcare. It's darn near impossible to go a day and not see someone naked. But that surely doesn't mean I'm lusting over these folks I work with. Far from it - I recognize the beauty and complexity inherent in the bodies God created but there is absolutely nothing sexual about helping a nurse insert a flatus tube (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=flatus+tube) or changing someone's soiled (read: poop filled) adult diaper.

So, why are they naked? For me personally, if it's sexual in nature, I tend to avoid it. It causes bad thoughts, which can lead to bad feelings and if unchecked bad actions. If it isn't sexual, what's wrong with it? Is it a medical show or a crime show? Is the nudity on a documentary?

The bottom line here is if it's something like Game of Thrones and you're feeling convicted, you probably should stop, even if you feel like it isn't affecting you.

I just realized I opened the blog post and didn't read it. I think he makes good points about loving your neighbor. Those bodies aren't really ours to see...

But again, err on the side of caution.
