PostSubject: My Son & Seizures   Fri Sep 30, 2016 11:34 am

I got a call from my oldest son last night when I was driving home from work (nearly an hour commute).  He was walking in town and had to stop and sit down in the park, he was afraid he was going to have a seizure.  I asked him why he would think that and he confessed that he had a seizure last Friday when he was with his girlfriend, but didn't want to tell us for some reason (he is 18, a recent High School grad and still lives with us).  Took us about 30 minutes to get to him, and we took him to the fire station to have them check his vitals, he didn't seem in any imminent danger so we drove him the hospital ER to get checked out.  They ran several tests on him and couldn't find any immediate reason for a seizure event so now we need to follow up with a specialist.
Would appreciate some prayer for him.  He hasn't made the best lifestyle choices, also he has been treated with medicine and counseling for depression.  I really hope they can figure out what might be causing the seizures and that it will be something treatable...and/or hopefully temporary.

First of all, I'll definitely pray for you, your family and especially your son.

That being said, I work with several people who have a seizure disorder. Yes, it can be deadly. Yes, it can cause irreparable damage. But, it can also be managed. I have 32 people on my caseload and around half of them have a seizure disorder. None of them have had seizures in the last 6 months or so. I had one client have one about February and prior to that, it had been several months as well.

Not to be discouraging. I'll pray for healing but also realize that this world is broken, we're decaying and sometimes we have infirmities.

I knew a few people that have seizure problems as well, and they both had good lives (as long as they kept up with their medication).
Problem with my son is that he doesn't tend to make the best choices for himself.  He smokes weed with far too often.  He doesn't eat with any kind of regularity (and most of what he eats is garbage), he doesn't get enough sleep...and engages in risky sexual activity (and that's just the stuff I know about).  If the doctor decides he needs to take regular medication to control seizures I don't have much faith that he will take them with any consistency.  He just quit taking his mood stabilizers a few months ago convinced that he doesn't need them anymore.
Sometimes being a parent really sucks.

I am praying, Gary.  This current situation could be what it takes to get him to turn to the Lord.

I'm praying that it will, but somehow I think it might take something even more drastic.

Thanks for your prayers everyone, I really appreciate it.

I just took him to a see a neurologist this morning.  He hasn't had another seizure (since the first one he had at the end of September), and the neurologist suspects that he doesn't have epilepsy (so he probably won't need the seizure meds).  He has to be scheduled for an EEG, and hopefully we will know more about his condition after the results of that.  Unfortunately he is now having panic attacks...and has been prescribed Xanax for those.

Definitely praying. Epilepsy runs in my family and this year on Good Friday my then 7 yr old daughter had a silent seizure. I was at work when it happened and when my wife called I immediately knew what happened and thanks to God we have some great doctors we take her to some 3 hours away.

Sorry to hear about that, it can be quite scary to see your children suffer like that.
