The Road Less Traveled

Or... the band less liked.

I've noticed that I have a tendency to like the less liked item of something. For example, Glenn Kaiser's work. It seems Rez is his most popular band and they're my least favorite thing he's done (I like them, don't get me wrong). I much prefer his solo blues work - Cardboard Box, Spontaneous Combustion, Ripley County, etc. I like that better than GKB. I even like the 3 worship albums he did.

And speaking of Rez, it seems their least popular album is Hostage (which Scott Waters doesn't even list on his nolifetilmetal.com website). I like it. A lot. I enjoy the new wave-y experimentation. It's not my favorite by the band - that would be Lament, followed by their more blues based albums.

Another example - I don't listen to either artist much anymore but I always liked Michael Sweet's solo stuff better than Stryper (except that piano ballad album in memory of his wife. No disrespect but I just never cared for it.).

My favorite Back to the Future movie is the third one. There, I said it.

Ernest Hemingway's best novels are usually considered The Sun Also Rises and Old Man and the Sea. Those are both great but my favorite is For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Anyone else like this?

I have found that with a few things myself.

I tend to like the heavier band's attemptd at more commercial sounding music.  Such as the Showdown's "Temptation Come My Way", it's the only album in their catalog that I like at all.  With Queensryche everybody absolutely loves their "Operation Mind Crime" album but I have so overplayed the thing that I almost never listen to it anymore and am more inclined to grab almost any other album to listen to.

Probably not so much with authors though as I don't tend to read all the works of most authors.  I will say that while I love most of Steinbeck's work I have never been able to get into Hemingway as much.   With the exception of "Farewell to Arms" I have thought that most of his books lacked a discernible ending (or often even beginning).  Seems like he has a great idea but doesn't know how to introduce the characters well or find an appropriate place to end the story.  I really like Stephen King, but don't really dig his horror novels much at all.  I more prefer his fantasy type stuff (the Dark Tower Series) and really dig his recent private detective novels.  I do think that King tends to write poor endings to his novels but I think I'm digressing here.

I love Steinbeck. My three favorite novels of all time are Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls, Steinbeck's East of Eden (which most critics panned) and Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby.

East of Eden is a great novel, but my favorite would have to be "Of Mice and Men".  I've never read any Fitzgerald, but I hope to remedy that someday.
