So in my post about Stevie Ray Vaughan staybrite mentioned purging secular music from his collection. I've done this too and thought it would be interesting to talk about.

For me, I can't listen to anything that's overly angry. That sounds weird - I can listen to aggressive music, from Theocracy to Showbread to How The West Was Won (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP9dnUmVR54) but if it's angry, I can't do it. Minor Threat is one of my favorite bands but I just can't listen to them. Ian McKaye was so angry and that anger just bled over and made me angry too.

I also can't listen to anything that's overtly sexual (unless it's blues where it's so absurd it's silly, like Mississippi John Hurt's Candy Man).

I've never had a huge secular collection.  Though at one time I had quite a few secular CD's (miniscule by the collector's standard) but sold them to pay bills.

I've never purged... but I am slowly transitioning towards a mostly-Christian collection it seems.  I find myself progressively less and less interested in secular music.  It's just hard for me to emotionally connect with lyrics that mean little-to-nothing to me.  That being said, a handful of my favorite bands are secular though nostalgia plays a huge role in my affinity for them (Iron Maiden, Sonata Arctica, and others).  But many bands that were top favorites of mine (Wolves In The Throne Room, Morgion, In The Woods..., Angra, etc.) I rarely listen to anymore.

Metallica was the first metal band I heard and got into and I listened to them pretty nonstop.  After a while, like Joshua, I just got tired of their ceaseless anger.  It got quite boring really!  Fantastic music but not being a particularly angry person myself, I couldn't connect to the music at all so I ended up just selling off all my Metallica CDs and haven't regretted it.

I did my great secular purge in 2005....same year I came to realize my need for Jesus.  I did it because I thought that was what good Christians did.  I either gave away or sold (at rock bottom prices) about 500 cds.  All I kept was my 4 or 5 Stryper Cds and the one White Heart cassette that I had.
Then I got seriously depressed.  I used the scant amount of money I had to start buying cds but most of it was the CCM stuff the band was playing at church......with the exception of Third Day, it all left me lacking and I got rid of most of it as well.  Then with a little bit of internet research I discovered a few bands that I had never heard of, Whitecross, Neon Cross, Rose & Saint.  Then I discovered BlastBeats and immediately spent all the rest of the money I had.  Found the CMR and CHM shortly after that.  I was "Christian Music" only until about 2012 or 2013 when I started collecting some of the stuff of I had purged.

Like Ish I have a problem with overly suggestive lyrics and anything that seems evil to me (I know, define “evil”).  Fortunately I was never a fan of Slayer or Venom because I couldn’t handle that at all.  I have a couple of secular albums that I have to skip songs on just because they bother me.  Like Kerrick mentioned I think nostalgia plays a big part with why I like many of those old secular bands.

I did a huge purge back in 1990.  I had nearly 1000 cassettes of hard rock/metal and cleaned house and never looked back until this year.  I have bought downloads of a lot of stuff that I have.  The overly sexual lyrics do bother me some.  I've noticed, though, that the more nostalgic albums I am more comfortable with but don't care for a lot of newer album by some bands.  Even when I do listen to anything secular, I still seem to gravitate back to music that seems to honor Jesus.

Ah yes.. "the purge". Mine was in '89 when I came to faith. I got mixed up with a group of believers that said "good Christians" eradicate all sin and things that resemble sin from their lives. While there is some truth to this, I took it too far. In one day I burned thousands of albums, hundreds of magazines, comics and books, posters, trading cards, VHS tapes, even my own art ! I literally had nothing but furniture and a few Christian books left.

Now, it was all done with a good heart. My desire was to please God, as I did not yet understand His unconditional and eternal love for me... and that I did not NEED to try to please Him as though He was moody with me like my earthly dad. Yet that's how I viewed Him for many years, and in my ignorant view of the Father, I continued to eradicate things in my life and tell other believers they should do the same.

Each believer is on their own personal journey and at a different place than other believers. It's imperative that we recognize that and be sensitive to those who have less understanding, as well as those who think they are further along when they aren't. I do not tell anyone they should or shouldn't listen to "secular" music cuz that's between them and God in their own convictions. Besides, I spent too many years pushing my legalism on to others.
What I CAN say is this: I have grown and learned so much from the lyrics of non-believers in the last several years - how they think, why they believe other things, and the emptiness of existing without a relationship with the Almighty. Most importantly, I have learned that music was created
by God for our pleasure and His, to be enjoyed regardless of whether the musicians are believers or not. And as the Psalms and Solomon's Song makes clear, the lyrics do not have to be about God or anything to do with God.
In an ideal world, all lyrics would be Godly. I tend to avoid all lyrics that exalt Satan and the occult and trash my Savior. Anything else does not bother me - but again, that is me.
And I have a mega collection - many thousands of Christian artist albums as well as about 4000 mainstream albums... I can't get enough music. I love it, I live it. It's a part of my life every day, some days - most of the day. I will listen to music all day long. It's so amazing to me, it's the only thing that can take my mind off my pain and problems. The only thing that can take my mind back to a time when life was more simple and without responsibility. I love music.

My collection secular music was so small.
I simply don't listen to the music anymore.

Great points. One of my best friends listens to a lot of hip-hop and some of it is angry. I enjoy the style but the anger just gets me and I can't listen to it.

I also cannot do "anger". Some aggression that sounds angry is fine. Living Sacrifice's Self Titled album is pretty hard and could be seen as "angry", but I love that one. I cannot stand all the new metalcore screamo stuff, as well as, like you said, the angry rap crap. I dig hip hop that's fun, happy, or rocks hard - but not the stuff that just loops continuous anger - can't stand that !

1. how do you guys define "angry" music? the way it sounds, what is being said lyrically, a combo or something else?

2. would "What A Joke" by Deliverance fall into the "angry" / you can't listen to it category?

For me it's more about lyrical content and presentation. Minor Threat has a lot of angry lyrics (Google them if you need to). I listen to a lot of heavy or aggressive music but the lyrics are either positive or calling out for God to help or what have you.

What Ishmael81 said ^

In my case, I shouldn't even really call it "angry" music, rather, I just personally do not like screamo, screaming, growling, gurgling, dying vocals... just not my thing. Some of it sounds angry - too aggressive for me. Course I'm gettin' to be an old fert these days, so, that may 'splain it.

well I dunno, I'm a little bit older fert than you and, whilst I don't really care for the screamo, I love me some good old school death metal

^I think oftentimes "aggressive" gets mistaken for "angry." Bands like Grave Declaration are pretty aggressive sounding (symphonic black metal) but their lyrics are mostly straight-up worship.

That being said, the growls and screams and such are all just a matter of taste. To me they don't [usually] sound angry and I find early Metallica FAR more angry sounding than much black or death metal.

My purge came when I was much younger.  Like junior high I think.  I went to one of those rock expose things at a local church (which was ironically done by the guys who would become the drummer and lead singer for Torn Flesh) and went home convinced that Satan was going to do all kinds of stuff to me through the evil, satanic music I was listening to.  So I gathered up my four cassette tapes--Billy Joel An Innocent Man, ZZ Top Eliminator, Michael Jackson Thriller, and the Flash Gordon soundtrack--along with my 45s of "Pac Man Fever," "Another One Bites the Dust"/"Don't Try Suicide," and "Rubber Band Man" and tossed them in the trash.  The next cassette I bought after that was Christy Lane's "Footprints in the Sand."  I didn't buy another secular album until around 87 when I felt like I was going to the back of the video store (you older guys know what I mean) when I went into Kmart and bought Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet.
