| I've posted this in the past, but have seen this phrase used a couple more times on Facebook and elsewhere recently, and just felt it was time to re-post this little study I did. I hope and pray that this helps even one person, and frees them from feeling like a failure (as I often did before I studied this out) ________________________________________________________________________________________
I’ve read it in books, heard it from friends and even from pulpits: “God will never give you more than you can handle” This misunderstanding leads people to think that whatever trial they go through, it won’t be too much for them to bear. May I say that this is NOT Biblical. This is a misguided understanding of 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
The passage is strictly dealing with temptation. This Scripture is clear: you will never fall into a temptation that is beyond your ability to say no. When giving an account before the Lord, no one will be able to say “I couldn’t help myself” because the Lord will say “ I always provided a way out of the temptation.”
Now, back to the original point. God can and does give His children more than they themselves can bear. An example of this is found in 2 Corinthians 1:8 “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.”
Throughout the Bible we find countless examples of people suffering unimaginable pains and losses. Believers since Christ have experienced pain, torture and loss as well. The reason God allows His children to experience hardships “far beyond our ability to endure” is to drive us to our knees in complete need of Him.
How can we call Him our “refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” if we can handle what’s dealt us in life ? How can we ever truly recognize our need for Him unless we are brought to the end of ourselves ?
Jesus said "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
Don’t condemn yourself if you’ve experienced something you feel you cannot endure. The way we ‘handle’, ‘bear’, or ‘deal’ with what we cannot endure is by recognizing that God is still in control, has a plan, and that HE will make us stand firm in Him until the day of redemption. 2 Cor. 1:21,22
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” 1 Peter 5:7

| Very nice. I've always hated that phrase. If God doesn't give us more than we can handle, why do we need him? | |

| Right on man! That one is right up there with people throwing the "I know the plans I have for you..." verse around all the time. I'm sure Stephen and the other martyrs for the faith would be glad to know that God's plan for their lives was prosperity and not harm. | |

| If Christians never endured more than they could bear, then how did the Apostles die? They were just serving the Lord and most had their lives stripped away painfully. I would call that being more than we could bear.
I've never fallen into the myth that God won't put on us more than we can bear. He promised that the world would hate and persecute us because they hated Jesus. Look what they did to Him! The Lord just promised to never leave us or forsake us. He did not say He would rescue us always in this life. _________________ I might have decided, or maybe not, that I should or shouldn't, depending on the issue or non-issue, to possibly share or not share, any thoughts, opinions, or facts (that might not be deemed factual by some), due to possible fear of any misinterpretation or retribution. https://christianhardmusic.niceboard.com/ | |
