CD-R's Empty
PostSubject: CD-R's   CD-R's I_icon_minitimeTue Feb 09, 2016 11:06 am

Since I've been a member of CHM I've noticed a bit of negative chatter concerning CD-R's.  I understand the feeling of thinking you're getting an original CD and then finding out it's a CD-R.  I'd feel the same way.  So my question to you is what about CD-R's released as original copies via a company like CreateSpace?  I used CreateSpace for both of my previous releases and even though they are made on demand and are CD-R's they are still a quality product.

So are those kinds of releases still a negative due to the CD-R format?

Being a fan of the more "underground" Christian extreme metal especially, I have lots of official CDr's and have no problem with them!  In a way, I think it's pretty cool.  My main thing though is that it's the official release.  What I really don't like is Amazon's print-on-demand CDs that aren't official but sell for a normal price for a CD.  I would rather have a CDr with a hand-written title in Sharpie from the band than that.

One other note though, it does seem a bit silly to pay the same price for a CDr as a professionally pressed CD with nice packaging, artwork, booklet, etc.  I understand at that point it is primarily all about quantities and if you're only pressing 100 copies, the price per CD is going to be similar to that of a professional CD release of 5,000 copies.

The packaging from CreateSpace is pretty sharp.  I can't find my photos here but I'll post a couple when I get home and can locate my files.

If a band is releasing their stuff via an outlet like this, I don't mind.  It is simply a marketing choice.  You have to do what you have to do to get your product out.  CreateSpace has some of the best CD-R copies with glossy inserts and artwork on the disc.  I would buy these if that is all a band decides to do.

If it is clearly labled as a CDR (and especially if it is released from the band that way). I don't really have a problem with that and have purchased a number of those myself. One of them didn't even come with an insert (actually came in a plain paper sleeve)...but I knew what I was getting and didn't mind.

What I really don't like is thinking that you are purchasing a silver disc with professional packaging for $15.99 (plus s&h) and getting a cheap photo-copy grade single page insert with a cheaply produced CDR (and that's happened to me as well).

That's how I felt upon receiving my first digi-pack.

^I know a fair few folks here feel that way (as I believe there's a thread about it) but I always felt like the digi-packs were nicer.  Usually those are the "exclusive"/fancy ones and then you can get the jewel-case if you don't want to spend the extra $$$.

This ^

A couple years ago I was buying CDs hand over fist off amazon (cuz I was employed and had money to burn back then, but that's another story). In buying stacks of albums I accidently chose 2 albums that were On-Demand CD-Rs (Christafari -Gravity and Red Lamb-S/T). I later realized the "fine print" said the albums were On-Demand, and I realized it was my fault and couldn't complain. Now, as for the quality ? They sound excellent ! As for the disappointment over no insert info like lyrics and band info, HUGE ! That's the WHOLE reason I hate these CDs. Has nothing to do with sound quality. I paid average price for a brand new album and got those 2 CD-Rs with the cheapo inserts. NOT what I wanted. I've since learned to slow down and read what I'm buying now. Lesson learned.

Yeah. As GF said you expect the real deal... Like if you go on Amazon and purchase any of the Intense albums for 9.99. You expect it to be just like the original or better with a booklet, band notes and lyrics. You assume you are buying an Intense release whether it be old stock or freshly pressed silver CDs. I too would be disappointed if mine came with a 1 page 1 sided insert with no info. They aren't even full covers because they have that black border around them.

If that were the only way to get that album, though, I would probably still buy it.

But... in my 2 cases, it wasn't the only way to get it. I could've easily picked those 2 titles up on ebay for the same price. Matter of fact, the Red Lamb I DID end up getting on vinyl for only 5 bucks more than what I paid for the cheap crap they sent me.
Again, it was MY fault for not reading every little detail (which I now do faithfully). But still sucks. Technically, I have 2 CDs with zero re-sale value. I didn't PLAN on reselling them, but I do look at my collection as a financial investment in case really hard times hit us in the future... I can easily make 6 months income off my collection - ASIDE from the crappy On-Demand trash that probably wouldn't fetch an 1/8th of what I paid.
