What is a mod podge?

I assume it has to do with "decopodge" -something that used to be big in the 70s and 80s. We used to place any kind of picture or paper that we wanted to immortalize, place it on a heavy board or wood, then brush on decopodge (like a glue - type substance). It would dry clear and preserve whatever picture or paper memento you applied to the board. Made several for my mom when I was a wee lad in the 70s.

You got it!  Mod Podge is just a brand that is big right now.  People are using this to take pictures of all sorts and preserve it like I did to make my picture.  Some use it to decorate all sorts of things like furniture, wooden boxes, etc.  It allows you to create almost an original piece of art using bits and pieces of things you enjoy.  That is exactly what I did here.

I am working on a 2nd one that will say "Pray more....Worry less".  I have the first level of paper affixed to the canvas board I am using (11"X14").  I am going to add a couple of accent strips and then position the two photos I found online.  They have been printed on glossy photo paper so that the ink from the ink jet printer won't run when it gets wet from the Mod Podge.  I will add the words last.  After it is all on, I will go over the whole piece again with the Mod Podge and this will seal it.  It can get very wet after it seals and it will not ruin it.

The process of using this is now called "Decoupage" and has caught on again.  I had never heard of this stuff in the 70s.  I thought givning my mom a finished "paint by number" picture was cool.  If you could actually tell what it was when I was finished, I thought that was really special!

Découpage just means "cutting up" in French. I've never heard of that technique of art, though. Funny.

Yeh, I wasn't sure what the spelling was... and that's cool that it's a French word Andre ! Kind of figured it was - sounds like it.  "Decoupage"
 
Twas a big thing when we were kids, we did all kinds of decoupage projects. My Mom still decoupages things in the house.

That's a very good advice you have written on the mod podge.

I have plans for a few more of these.  I am going to take lines from hymns but not the actual title and put these on boards.  Yes, it will be made more for the church going Christian. 

For example, I want to do one with a lighthouse.  Instead of putting "I thank God for the lighthouse", I want to put a different phrase that will make the person looking at it remember the whole line.  I want to say, "...Where would this ship be?".  The whole like in the song actually says, "If it weren't for the lighthouse, then where would this ship be?".  The lighthouse is a metaphor for God and the ship is one for us.  Essentially, I would be illustrating this line and allowing the viewer to make the jump in their heart and minds.  It may be too abstract for most people, but isn't that art sometimes?

I might do one for my studio as well with the Death Star and the Enterprise on it.  The only caption would be, "BOTH!"  It would be the answer to people for which do you prefer:  Star Wars or Star Trek.

Is it weird for a guy who likes metal and modern rock to use a banjo on a song?  OK, it isn't a real banjo.  It was my three string cigar box guitar played into a microphone with no amplifcation and then a lot of reverb added to make it sound like a banjo.  Is that weird?  Yes?  COOL!!!
